There’s something about shooting at zombies. Seriously. The act of taking a make believe hand cannon that you point at a mob of slow-walking yet maliciously-ravenous undead drones and blasting them all into ether is downright cathartic. Notice that I didn’t say that there’s something about zombies per se. No, I’m of the mind that thinks that the z-army are pretty substandard horror creations: slow, dumb, and boring. Add a rocket launcher, though, and things are magic, I tell you.

I don't make it in to Blockbuster too much these days. In this era of iTunes, Hulu, YouTube and many other online sources of video on-demand, I still associate them with DVD movie rentals, and forget that they have a video game section called "GameRush" there as well. Last weekend, I stopped by my local Blockbuster and looked over the Pre-Played games. I found a game there that I had considered buying in the past called "Battle of the Bands". When it was first new, the game cost $49.99. Now pre-played, it cost $4.99.

OK, I admit it – I’m a Best Buy junkie. I stop in about once a week, and I ALWAYS spend money. Granted, it’s usually just buying Welch’s Fruit Snacks for my son, but I always buy something. I’m a Reward Zone Silver Premier member – it’s my duty to buy something when I visit.

Every once in a while, Best Buy gets the zany idea of putting a pretty darn good game on sale for a ridiculously low price. I’m a big fan of the Guitar Hero series, and have thoroughly enjoyed playing Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero: World Tour. On a recent visit to buy Welch’s Fruit Snacks, I found Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for the Nintendo Wii on sale for $9.99. Being a big fan of the Guitar Hero games, I was pleasantly surprised to see such a great deal on this game. I scooped it up right away, and played it as soon as I got home while my son ate his oversized bag of Welch’s Fruit Snacks.

Gaming on the Cheap – Volume 1 - AMF Bowling Pinbusters for Nintendo Wii

I’m a regular shopper at my local Target. One of the things I make a regular habit of is looking through the clearance racks in the electronics section. Sometimes I find some not-so-great values, like that Mario Kart wall cling for my son’s room that he pulled off of his door and rolled into a ball, and that set of SVHS cables that I found no use for on my new 50” HDMI HDTV.

But sometimes, I find some very good values there. One in particular is the subject of this new section of Twin Galaxies called “Gaming on the Cheap”. It features modern console games that are a great value both for their price and their content. The topic of volume 1 is the game AMF Bowling Pinbusters by Mud Duck Productions for the Nintendo Wii. My son had been eyeballing this game when it was in the $19.99 section of the store, and when I found it on the clearance shelf for $10.88, I decided it was a low risk investment and gave it a try. I’m glad I did.

Twin Galaxies International and G4 Media, Inc. are proud to announce national television coverage of Steve Wiebe's attempt to reclaim the Donkey Kong World Record. The event is taking place today as part of the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) from the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Twin Galaxies is on-hand for this historic live airing of a World Record attempt, which will be airing on the G4 Network. This marks the first time ever a full World Record Attempt of a video game has ever been aired live on national television.

Twin Galaxies would like to share with its gaming community an important message about counterfeit USB drives. Gamers often use USB drives to transfer music, movies, pictures and even save game files from their console gaming systems. USB drives are a convenient way to store and move these types of content, and they are a great way to back up content from consoles for use on other devices.

Lately, there have been a number of "high capacity" USB flash drives cropping up on sites such as eBay and Craigslist. These drives claim to have high capacities of 500GB or more and claim to be from reputable manufacturers such as Sony, Kingston and more. Sadly, gamers that have purchased these devices have found themselves to the victims of fraud.

Once a year, Twin Galaxies gamers and staff from all corners of the earth converge in one location: The famous Funspot Arcade in New Hampshire.

Talented gamers on both modern and classic games are there from May 28-31 to compete in both the Annual Funspot Classic Gaming Tournament as well as taking attempts at setting new World Record marks on machines all over the famed gaming destination. An incredible 48 new World Records were set at Funspot X in 2008.

Game Review: Gate of Thunder for Nintendo Wii Virtual Console

Once upon a time there was a set of consoles known as the Turbografx-16 and Turbo Duo that were way ahead of their time - so ahead of their time that if only they were marketed properly they may have been capable of taking on the Playstation and Dreamcast. Alas, their time in the market was far too short. One title of particular interest though was Gate of Thunder, a side scrolling, futuristic space shooter for the Turbo Duo console.

Whether or not you were able to experience the Turbo consoles, Hudson and Red Entertainment have brought back this title for gamers' enjoyment.

The NPD Group: More Americans Play Video Games Than Go Out to the Movies

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, May 20, 2009 – According to The NPD Group, a leader in market research for the entertainment industry, nearly two out of three Americans (63 percent) have played a video game in the past six months. While that level of penetration does not begin to compete with music listening, which is nearly universal (94 percent), it exceeds the percentage of U.S. consumers who report going out to the movies (53 percent), during that same time period. Gaming is also benefiting from new outlets for playing. Overall 10 percent of U.S. consumers played video games on a social network. Five percent have paid to download a video game from the Web, which is an increase of nearly 2 percent since last year.

Game Review: Mario Kart DS for Nintendo DS

It all started back on the Super Nintendo in a title known simply as, Super Mario Kart. Having eight unique racers and 20 different tracks available it easily became one of the most known titles for the system, sparking a long lasting series to this day. The portable end of the series began for the Gameboy Advance entitled, Mario Kart Super Circuit which carried on to the current handheld title Mario Kart DS.

What makes Mario Kart DS unique is the new additions, racers, add-ons, and features available. When you first start the game, you’ll have two brand new grand prix to play (8 brand new tracks, thus four per grand prix) and two retro grand prix to play (8 old tracks comprised of previous Mario Kart games from the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance). After successfully completing these, you’ll unlock two more grand prix to the new set and two more grand prix to the old set so you’ll have a total of 32 tracks to play both old and new.

Ken House Reclaims Dig Dug World Record

Ken House has proven once again that he is on top of his game with a new World Record for the arcade title Dig Dug. Ken achieved this record with a score of 4,690,190 points, claiming the top spot from fellow Dig Dug master Donald Hayes. Ken recently took a time out to talk with Twin Galaxies Staff Writer Richard Booth to tell us the story of this illustrious World Record as well as to share some tips with Twin Galaxies readers.

Be sure to read past the final interview question, because Ken’s interview also marks the debut appearance of a new interview section called Ref’s Perspective. Twin Galaxies will, whenever possible, ask the referee who verifies a World Record to give us their take on the interview subject’s World Record and what it was like to view these World Records first-hand.

Iowa town hopes lure of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong can turn arcade's glory into video gamer's mecca

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — For a brief shining moment in the 1980s, Ottumwa was the unlikely hot spot of the fledgling video game industry as gamers around the globe flocked to this sleepy Iowa city and its video game arcade for a series of landmark tournaments.

Gamers set world records, the TV show "That's Incredible" broadcast a tournament to a national audience, and then-mayor Jerry Parker dubbed Ottumwa "The Video Game Capital of the World."

Steve Wiebe has recently claimed the Donkey Kong Junior World Record with a score of 1,139,800 points. Steve accomplished this while gearing up for another World Record attempt; he will appear at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles to attempt to claim the World Record that became the story for the film “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”. Steve will attempt to claim the Donkey Kong World Record not only in front of a live audience, but in the presence of the entire country when his World Record attempt is broadcast live on G4.

California Gamer Sets Historic Perfect Score on Tetris

Harry Hong of Los Angeles, California has pulled off a World Record that other gamers will never be able to eclipse, they can only hope to tie. Harry has managed to pull off the first ever officially verified maximum score of 999,999 on the legendary Tetris for the Nintendo Entertainment System, capping off a 4 year journey.

Possibly the most competitive NES title ever at Twin Galaxies, the NES version of Tetris cannot count higher than Harry’s new World Record score, freezing the score at the max-out point, and forever immortalizing this legendary accomplishment.

Twin Galaxies Staff Writer Richard Booth recently got the chance to chat with Harry about his history-making record as well as his love for gaming in general, and if he will take his Tetris skills to the Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS versions of the game.

Steve Wiebe Takes Donkey Kong Junior World Record With Score of 1,139,800

With Twin Galaxies and the G4 Network preparing for Steve Wiebe's arrival at E3 in Los Angeles, CA in early June, Steve has been doing some preparing of his own.

While Steve hopes he can regain the Donkey Kong World Record on live national television on June 2, he is able to lay claim to recent success on another classic Donkey Kong title.

Twin Galaxies World Record Holder Wins At National Tournament

Justin Wong, a Twin Galaxies World Record holder on several titles, now stands as the Street Fighter IV National Champion.

Wong earned this major crown on Sunday, April 19 at the finals of GameStop's Street Fighter IV National Tournament, beating out 15 other champions crowned over a series of qualifying tournaments from the past few months.

Justin Wong is currently listed in the Twin Galaxies database as the official World Record holder for many other fighting games, including the PlayStation 2 versions of the Street Fighter Alpha series, the original Street Fighter on the XBox, and the arcade versions of Super Street Fighter II and Darkstalkers.

Twin Galaxies Staff Member Scott Patterson has found himself busy trying to fend off Jeffrey Widzinski, a gamer brand-new to Twin Galaxies. The two are battling over the World Record for Biggest Blowout on Madden NFL 2009 All Play for the Nintendo Wii, with a spot in the Guinness Gamers Edition 2010 possibly at stake.

Jeffrey has already knocked Patterson off the throne once this year and is threatening to do it once again. Twin Galaxies Staff Writer Richard Booth caught up with both men to gain some vital information, stats, and thoughts as the world looks on.
