Happy New Year!

We are going to be adding some significant functionality to the site VERY soon and we thought that it would be good to have a discussion preview of what is going to be arriving.

While we are testing this stuff as much as possible we do anticipate there being some bugs to work out once it is implemented, so we think that the community having some advance notice on what to look out for may be helpful.

Here are some items:

1.) The entire drop down menu system is being replaced with something faster and simpler. It will allow direct access to specific forums with a single mouseclick as well as other primary functionality. Everything non-essential will be eliminated for more simplicity and elegance.

2.) Thanks/Likes will become available for all Wall Posts. These indicators will be located at the top of the Wall post and available in the preview so you can immediately see the community feedback on each Wall Post as you scroll through them.

3.) Notifications - This has been a huge undertaking to implement properly and comprehensively. We wanted notifications to be instantaneous as well as not producing heavy server load or exploit opportunities for people to try to use to crash the site.

Notifications will be for practically everything that matters on TG. Some examples include (these are not the exact text verbiage):

“USER X” FOLLOWED YOU

“USER X” SENT YOU A PRIVATE MESSAGE

“USER X” COMMENTED ON YOUR WALL POST

“USER X” COMMENTED ON A WALL POST THAT YOU COMMENTED ON

“USER X” COMMENTED ON AN ADJUDICATION THAT YOU VOTED ON.

YOU VOTED ON A SUBMISSION WHICH GOT ACCEPTED

YOU VOTED ON A SUBMISSION WHICH GOT REJECTED

“USER X” CANCELED A SUBMISSION YOU VOTED ON

“USER X” LIKED YOUR POST

“USER X” THANKED YOU

“USER X” MENTIONED YOU

“USER X” QUOTED YOU

“USER X” IS STREAMING LIVE

“USER X” JUST BEAT YOUR RECORD!!

"CONTROVERSY" WITH AN ADJUDICATION YOU HAVE VOTED ON

There will be a series of oncoming upgrades to the site and this will be just the beginning.

Things like: Track filtering, Track genre categorization, player bounty system, more integration with the tournament system, more search options, the challenge system, etc. are all on the list.

Additionally, a better overall user interface along with better mobile access is in the works.

We appreciate your patience on these items and are looking forward to an exciting year of more growth with TG!

Will there be a notification available for when a score is submitted for a track that you have an existing score on?

There will only be a notification if that score is accepted and it beats your existing score.

Is there, or will there be, a way to look at who we follow and make appropriate changes if needed?

Thanks.

Any update on when we can "cash in" submission points for items?

it was mentioned a while back, but haven't heard anything for a while

Keep the upgrades coming!

I keep getting notifications about old scores getting approved or rejected although they were already approved or reject. Any ideas on when this will be fixed?

I look forward to the new year, thank you for the heads up on these changes.

Will there ever be a regular occurring State of the Galaxies show? Years ago there was Richie Knuckle's Arcade Culture. That was a weekly show with guests and of course tons of people in the chat. It was good times. Then that faded away and the Galaxy was sad. State of the Galaxies came and was exciting, bringing even more people together for fun times, but that too has taken a back seat.

I guess what I am saying is that a weekly interactive show is a cohesive force for the community, a place where we can all watch the show, learn about current events in the gaming world, and joke around with each other.

I believe it is a missed opportunity.

Thank you for the continued improvements and ongoing effort to ensure that TG is great!

One request, for an addition to the notification system - notifications when your rank has dropped on a track. For instance, I currently hold the #1 spot on a track, and someone sets a new world record for that track. I would be notified that I am now #2.

I'm sure it's easier said than done, but at the same time, I think it would encourage the true spirit of TG - healthy competition.

Yes the new system will do that. Whenever someone has beaten your score (dropped you in rank) you will get a notification. The first update of the notification will not have this, but it will be in the second update which should be less than 2 weeks after.

Jace:

I like the new notification variety, but some are more important than others.

Any way that the following four can be prioritized in some way, maybe at the top of your notification list or via some other means of doing so ?

“USER X” SENT YOU A PRIVATE MESSAGE
YOU VOTED ON A SUBMISSION WHICH GOT REJECTED
“USER X” JUST BEAT YOUR RECORD!!
"CONTROVERSY" WITH AN ADJUDICATION YOU HAVE VOTED ON

The others that you cited do not carry the same weight as the above four.

This will likely be an unpopular comment, but here goes:

If more TG members effectively used the resources that are already available (subscription folders, user control panel, etc.), some of the listed notification categories would be unnecessary.

Put another way, if you're willing to devote a small amount of additional time and effort, staying on top of things isn't terribly difficult.

Features that exist, but are not being taken advantage of by the user base, are functionally equivalent to features that do not exist.

In the end, it comes down to the User Experience - any features must be discoverable and usable by the end user. If it's not being used, there's a flaw somewhere along the line.

Time of event is the prioritization order. Something happens, you get notified immediately. The notifications show up in the new drop down menu system that is coming. They will also show up on your user profile page in a nice comprehensive list.

Jace, notifiying people of controversy seems like something people should do on their own. There's been concern for a while about blind voters. I wont go into more detail other than "concern" as the solution gets controversial. The "cancel" feature made it easier to blidnly click accept since you could just accept everything safely, and then change your vote on cancel noification. The only thing catching blind voters was controversial non-cancelled submissions (not that they were hard to find if you check comment count). Now though, thats made even easier. Especially with talk of submissions points becoming more valuable and equivalent to some form of currency, the motivation to just blind accept increases, additionally, these changes make the punishment virtually removed.

I understand there are benefits but there are downsides too. The changes, as they've been stated, I think will compromise the integrity of the adjudication process. I'm not saying the changes are necessarily bad, but I am saying they may need additional changes to go along with them as a package deal to prevent abuse.
