TWIN GALAXIES
04-12-2017 at 12:07 AM

As you may have noticed, the Twin Galaxies website just underwent a significant upgrade. :)

We recommend that if you have visited the Twin Galaxies site prior to April 11th, that you please clear your web browser's cache and refresh the site a couple times to clear out all the old TG webcode and replace it with the new stuff. Not doing this may result in some website display issues.

A tremendous amount of work and changes are currently being activated and as they come online there will likely be some initial problems to correct. We appreciate your patience as we discover and sort out these lingering issues.

The changes are extensive, however there are some notable items:

Site is a bit easier to see and navigate on mobile. Yay!

Search system has been upgraded! In the upper right corner of the site is a search magnifying glass. This is the new search function and the site will now return much better and useful results that it had previously.

Upload system has been upgraded! We believe that we have successfully solved the issue that some members with slower connections were having when uploading large files. Additionally, members can now choose multiple files at once to upload. Give it a try! :)

Premium Tracks (track filtering)
We have implemented the first stage of our leaderboard (track) filtering system. This directly addresses member's ongoing concerns regarding database track dilution through ongoing user track creation.

There are only 2 types of Tracks in our system. PREMIUM and NOT PREMIUM.

Premium Tracks are what all users will see by default.

Premium Tracks are tracks that are considered by Twin Galaxies to have at least one (1) of these attributes:

High Quality (as determined by Twin Galaxies Administration)
Sufficiently Competed On
Promotional of Twin Galaxies' Goals as an Organization

Starting in May 2017, only records held on Premium Tracks will be eligible for entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

User created tracks are not Premium by default.

In order for a user created track to become Premium, it must either be made premium by Twin Galaxies Administration, or the track must have at least 10 adjudicated records on it.

When a user created track contains 10 adjudicated records, it will automatically become Premium as it will have reached the minimum participation standard. It will then become eligible to be submitted to Guinness World Records.

The current Premium tracks that are established and viewable are all of the tracks that were acquired from the previous era of Twin Galaxies (prior to April 2014.) This effectively removes any and all new era user created track dilution from the system default view (unless a user created track has more than 10 records - then it is now premium as well.)

User created tracks that may not ever be able to achieve the 10 participant minimum, but are high quality and have some competitors that would like the track to become premium can have the original track founders submit a request for TG admin to review and consider.

We hope that you like the upgrades and appreciate your patience as we work out all the kinks!

More info soon!

and it's a track that stands as one of the craziest for that console!

No real argument with this or Dick's comment, but this is an inexact science we're dealing with here...some things like "skill required" or "quality of track" are tough to measure - number of users competing on a track may not be a perfect way to address the question, but it's easily calculable, inherently makes sense (being the best out of thousands is more impressive than being the best out of 3), and is the best option I've heard offered up so far.

The "share" link only seems to work for Premium tracks. I have tried this on multiple games and different computers.

To replicate: Go to a game, click the track name to expand the score board, click the share link, copy the link, paste link in to browser. Result is Premium track takes to you to the score, User track says no results.

Examples:

Premium track, After Burner II Genesis - https://www.twingalaxies.com/scores.p...53&ref=fbshare

Results found:

Also, maybe something can be done about the size of the big yellow area?

User track, Columns, original mode Genesis - https://www.twingalaxies.com/scores.p...20&ref=fbshare

It says no results found, and I do have Premium unchecked:

I'm sorry, Jace, but the Premium track idea has had to have been the worst idea that's been implemented lately. I really wish tracks weren't segregated or you just targeted the Novelty tracks because all this has really done more harm than good. I haven't requested a single track to become Premium because I'm hoping things will change.

Overall, this has really brought down the morale of the community as a whole and I know that's not what you were trying to achieve but face it.. I haven't seen really too much happiness towards the whole of TG as of late.

Maybe it is because I am new, but I honestly don't understand why these Novelty tracks even exist in first place. They seem to dumb down the credibility of TG when they are mixed in with legit tracks. I agree not everything needs to be taken seriously, and we can be silly with our games.. So maybe there should be a new category for Novelty that is not console specific (like how the GWR and Speedrun categories are)?

I think mixing certain activities in while trying to play a game or something of that nature is a great idea but not something that should be mixed in with the scoreboard. I'm pretty sure out of all the user created tracks lately, .01% of them were novelty. Considering how long it takes the staff to get things fixed (besides the uploader that was on point!) that aren't too high on the priority list.. I really don't think a huge influx of members saying their games should be Premium while the staff reviews if it qualifies is going to make things go any faster.

Well said Desidious.

I too feel this Premium track idea is a really bad idea. You are giving new members even more reason to not get started here and also giving more reason for people not to participate in certain tracks and totally devaluing your own scoreboard.

Yes, you can ask for Premium but honestly like Desidious said, i too feel this will overwhelm the admin staff here with their already over loaded workload and it's a life long addition to the workload too which will continue to grow as new games are made. The evidence you can't keep up as it is, is visible (Nintendo Switch platform, My Ridge Racer DB errors I've asked to be sorted out about 4 months ago, challenge system) so why are you adding more work?

Honestly in my opinion if you really insist on this Premium thing then the community shouldn't be doing game track creation. It should be done from the admins, if you have time to do this Premium stuff then you have time to add the tracks and rule sets yourselves and make sure you (and Guinness) have the games you want in the database. This would also help growth in the long run as the grind for submission points is much lower.

All i can say is I'm very happy i did my records when i did as starting out now would be seriously painful. I'm grateful and lucky that my records which i actually care about are all Premium. I feel for others who will be turned down though or aren't currently Premium.

but face it.. I haven't seen really too much happiness towards the whole of TG as of late.

Glad I'm not the only one seeing this...

This. But really, this was a question I had before Premium/Non-premium was even a thing.

I can understand charging submission points if a user wants to make a non-standard variation of a track. But if a game does not exist in the database at all, and a user wants just a basic high score or fastest time track added, then TG should add the track.

There has been no premium track request that has remained unanswered. It is not an issue.

I messaged several weeks ago regarding a few tracks and never got a response, so this is untrue.
