TWIN GALAXIES
04-12-2017 at 12:07 AM

As you may have noticed, the Twin Galaxies website just underwent a significant upgrade. :)

We recommend that if you have visited the Twin Galaxies site prior to April 11th, that you please clear your web browser's cache and refresh the site a couple times to clear out all the old TG webcode and replace it with the new stuff. Not doing this may result in some website display issues.

A tremendous amount of work and changes are currently being activated and as they come online there will likely be some initial problems to correct. We appreciate your patience as we discover and sort out these lingering issues.

The changes are extensive, however there are some notable items:

Site is a bit easier to see and navigate on mobile. Yay!

Search system has been upgraded! In the upper right corner of the site is a search magnifying glass. This is the new search function and the site will now return much better and useful results that it had previously.

Upload system has been upgraded! We believe that we have successfully solved the issue that some members with slower connections were having when uploading large files. Additionally, members can now choose multiple files at once to upload. Give it a try! :)

Premium Tracks (track filtering)
We have implemented the first stage of our leaderboard (track) filtering system. This directly addresses member's ongoing concerns regarding database track dilution through ongoing user track creation.

There are only 2 types of Tracks in our system. PREMIUM and NOT PREMIUM.

Premium Tracks are what all users will see by default.

Premium Tracks are tracks that are considered by Twin Galaxies to have at least one (1) of these attributes:

High Quality (as determined by Twin Galaxies Administration)
Sufficiently Competed On
Promotional of Twin Galaxies' Goals as an Organization

Starting in May 2017, only records held on Premium Tracks will be eligible for entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

User created tracks are not Premium by default.

In order for a user created track to become Premium, it must either be made premium by Twin Galaxies Administration, or the track must have at least 10 adjudicated records on it.

When a user created track contains 10 adjudicated records, it will automatically become Premium as it will have reached the minimum participation standard. It will then become eligible to be submitted to Guinness World Records.

The current Premium tracks that are established and viewable are all of the tracks that were acquired from the previous era of Twin Galaxies (prior to April 2014.) This effectively removes any and all new era user created track dilution from the system default view (unless a user created track has more than 10 records - then it is now premium as well.)

User created tracks that may not ever be able to achieve the 10 participant minimum, but are high quality and have some competitors that would like the track to become premium can have the original track founders submit a request for TG admin to review and consider.

We hope that you like the upgrades and appreciate your patience as we work out all the kinks!

More info soon!

Didn't work. I run a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. It's been completely cleared out. Please start off with the View Premium box unchecked and not checked please.

@admin staff

I don't know what you guys did but as soon as I was able to do it on my laptop I could do it on my phone. Seems like everything is working now. The only thing I did was clear out my cache again on my laptop and as soon as it worked there I just refreshed on my phone and it was working. I don't get the correlation between the two machines other than they both use Chrome.

I still say leave the "view only premium" box unchecked so we can decide ourselves if we want to filter things. Feels like you're making my decision for me.

Chrome is smarter than I thought. When I delete a bookmark in Chrome from my phone app it deletes it when I access Chrome on my PC.

It's quite possible there IS a correlation between desktop app and mobile app. I couldn't begin to tell you how though. The cache seems like it would be something machine-specific unless Chrome keeps it based on your user not your machine.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, as I'm not seeing either of those at the bottom of any page (whether a forum topic or wall entry).

Also, why are inserted images failing to display properly? Most images have been replaced with a generic icon. Attempting to right-click the "placeholder" and open the image in a new tab results in the following error:

Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator.

Yes we are working on this.. It is a problem.

We can not do that because we want the new user experience to be defaulted to viewing only TG approved Premium tracks...

The correct solution is for the site to remember user preference once selected. We are working on that...

issue with mobile when scrolling through records. Scrolling sort of works, but appears broken at first. If you want to scroll up, you have start with you finger at the very bottom and go up. If you want to scroll down you have to start with your finger at the very top then scroll down. If you start with your finger anywhere in the middle, left/right scrolling will still work but up/down will not.

I am really starting to dig the new look, the refined layout, etc. One thing would make me super happy: dark theme

TG is seriously bright on an Ipad at night.

I am hoping that the "checkbox" to show all scores as opposed to premium scores only is something that you can check for your entire session just once as opposed to having to do so for each and every show-score inquiry within your session as that would become very annoying VERY quickly.

As for the TG staff determining whether a variation with less than 10 scores is a "premium" variation...if that is based solely on whether that variation was part of a competition that's one thing, otherwise it will inevitably be a subjectivity situation and also inevitably will lead to many gamers pleading their cases for "premium" status to be afforded to one or more "variations" that are important to them. And then who is to judge whether one gamer's "variation" is more important than another's ? Best to leave subjectivity out of the equation entirely to be 100% fair and impartial.

@RTM Here's how I see this - Tracks founded by users that don't have 10+ participants fall into a small number of categories:

1. Titles not represented yet in the TG database and which tracks represent the standard Points or Fastest Completion tracking based on default settings and/or tournament settings and marathon settings.

2. Variations on existing titles that are already represented in the capacity mentioned in group #1.

3. Titles not represented in the TG database that have yet to have standard tracks founded but have tracks founded regarding some subset of gameplay and not Points or Fastest Completion per standard/default rules and settings.

The tracks in Group 1 I fully expect TG to make Premium. Every single one of them barring some typo or error in the presentation of the track. I also believe the largest proportion of user founded tracks reside in Group 1.

The tracks in Group 2 are where things get subjective. I also think that Group 2, like Group 1, is largely dominated by well-intentioned tracks that track some subset or rules variation of the existing track. Tracks of this type I also think TG will make Premium. Tracks in Group 2 that have a unique angle on the competition proposed are those that stand to incur the greatest amount of consideration. In this case I trust TG to make a decision that is in the best spirit of objective competition.

The tracks in Group 3 should prompt the founding of standard Points or Fastest Completion tracks per default settings/rules by TG and then be subject to the considerations of Group 2.

These are one man's opinions.

I believe most user founded tracks will be made Premium because of the nature of said tracks as outlined above. As for the variations that are subjective in the nature of legitimacy, I'm totally fine with TG making the decision as to what best represents a valid competitive target of the game (Premium) and what represents a "cult" type of enjoyment and participation (non-Premium).

After all, all tracks still exist and users can found whatever tracks they see fit. No one is taking this away. All forms of competition can be envisioned by TG users and founded, tracked, and submitted to. I respect TG's authority to decide what should be considered Premium because, after all, it's a designation that will largely be applied to most user founded tracks.

I think you'll find only "cult" tracks will remain non-Premium. I support the existence of cult tracks but support the discretion of TG to refrain from defining them as Premium.

I agree that subjectivity is always difficult and it is impossible to make everyone happy - however, SOMETHING must decide what is premium TG and what is not, and TG Admin will be that decision maker for the foreseeable future.

We are working on making the “Only Show Premium Tracks” checkbox a remembered user pref.

Yes, I am able to see the image.

However, it appears that images previously inserted (before this change) have not been affected, as they are still represented by a generic placeholder.

Moments ago, I edited one of my earlier comments and re-uploaded an image (both there and below):

It now displays correctly (at least for me).
