Dear Community,

Adding new gaming platforms to the database requires a certain amount of resources (for instance we need to create all the icons/art.) Due to this, we only add platforms periodically.

We have now come to the time where we can add some platforms and so we wanted to reach out and get some suggestions!

Other than the Nintendo Switch, what new platforms would you like to see added?

I agree with EMU Consoles and Consoles becoming separate, like what happened with Arcade scores and MAME scores. It makes a whole lot of sense. Especially for people who just can't get those consoles anymore. There would be a lot more scores just like MAME. Also, I believe that if consoles games are being emulated on a Raspberry Pi, it should fall under EMU Consoles. If there are games made for the Raspberry Pi, then it should fall under Raspberry Pi. By the way, thinking of this while typing, maybe there should be a ruleset for EMU Console, like what type of emulators are being used and other things like framerate requirements, etc. So it's just like the TG Tournament or MAME ruleset. Also, there needs to be more Steam games added, probably in a separate category, so games like Crimzon Clover: World Ignition, DariusBurst: Chronicle Saviors, Rocksmith 2014 Remastered (Score Attack Mode), and others will get more attention. So, Crimzon Clover: World Ignition needs to be moved to the Steam category if that happens (Currently in PC category). Sorry for the wall of text, Thank you.

If the Sega CD and The Sega 32X are considered separate systems, then the 32XCD ( what you get when you combine a Genesis/Mega Drive + Sega CD + 32X + a game that requires all 3 components) needs to be its own category. Also the Supercharger and Kid Vid games should be a separate category from the 2600, and the Adam and/or Super Game Module from the Colecovision, by that logic. Finally, a category of dedicated game consoles would be useful and can all fit under one category if any of them were single player vs the CPU, otherwise, unless you got all willing competitors in one room and did it world championship style, it's hard to draw a benchmark, but most of those games required a human opponent. I second the Arcadia 2001, as I have 2/3 of the US releases, plus consider the fact that certain games are legal in Europe, but Atari was suing competitors so anything that drew Atari's attention had to be neutered for the US audience, so the US version has to be different because there's different programing logic. There were pre- and post-corrected versions of certain ROMs, the most notorious of which were Donkey Kong Colecovision and Auto Racing Intellivision, and games like that should have a version check where they do something, (like climb the ladder and jump in the hidden hole in Donkey Kong) to prove which version they have so the distinction can be made.

Steam should be considered! Why did my suggestion just get completely ignored?

IMO, Steam is a delivery service of software, not a platform. PC or mac is the Hardware that you play on. And if the game is available for both PC and Mac on steam. Those games are coded different on each "platform" PC or Mac. so the gameplay could be different. For example Pinball Arcade for MAC is not the same game as Pinball Arcade on PC.

Cause I have it on both and the game is actually played on the same "hardware" (computer). Mac Pro 3,1. But since it is coded different, play not the same depending what OS I use.

But the Nintendo eshop, PSN and xbox live arcade are delivery service of software, are they not?

True I agree, that Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games should be under the same platform as "xbox360" as they were played on the same hardware.

There is not a standalone system out there that just plays Xbox Live Arcade games. Just saying.

For example

Hotline Miami Should be tracked on all the following platforms.

PC
MAC
PS3
PS4
PS Vita
Android

Not Playstation 3 PSN or Playstation 4 PSN,

my two cents.

While all these suggestions regarding sorting/splitting/consolidating are great, that matter is an entirely different issue/effort and not currently under consideration at this time.

The context of this query is just for the purposes of what stand alone gaming platforms should be added to the database. From what I can tell - these below additions should cover everything at this point:

Nintendo Switch
ColecoVision / Adam
Arcadia 2001 / Emerson
Tiger Electronics
Nintendo Game and Watch
Other LCD Games
Neo Geo X
Sega Mega Drive / Ultimate
Sinclair ZX Spectrum VEGA
Atari Flashback
Intellivision Flashback
Colecovision Flashback
Raspberry PI
Orange PI
PC Engine
NES/Famicom/Disc - RENAME CURRENT
SNES/SFC - RENAME CURRENT
Supervision
Laserdisc/Daphne
Jakks TV Plug and Play

Anything else?

Please understand that some of the separated platforms like Nintendo eshop, PSN and xbox live arcade were pre-existing in the database when Twin Galaxies was acquired in 2014. They were not added by this administration and the matter of sorting/splitting/consolidating the database is non-trival and will have to be addressed at a later time.

I had an essay typed out about how Steam should be it's own category but whatever. I have experience with PC and Mac gaming but me talking about it would get me ridiculed or ignored. The site continues to ignore modern gaming and my own wishes and instead considers absolute jokes like "Jakks TV Plug and Play". C'mon.

Let me explain. You asked for new categories. I didn't talk about splitting or rearranging. I simply suggested a new category because it is unique. But whatever right? At the end of the day, this site is for old-school gamers. You host a huge H1Z1 tournament and hype it up, but completely disregard a category that has huge pull-power for new gamers coming onto your site.

Also, one more thing. Shoutout to the people who supported my suggestion. Thanks for the support. It's nice to see a few people on here who see the insane stature of Steam and it's potential to become a TG category.

Before I respond please take a look at what @timmell said:

It is possible that you may have misread the original starting post of this thread. This thread is not asking about new CATEGORIES, it is asking about new PLATFORMS.

There is a difference. No one is trying to disregard anything. So no worries!

I didn't realize there was a difference between "CATEGORIES" and "PLATFORMS" because they're typically the same thing. But, in this case, they still are the exact same thing. Jace, as someone who runs a professional esports team, it never ceases to surprise me how much you ignore that type of modern gaming on this site. Why not have Steam as a category? I don't get it. Oh well. Whatever. I'm never going to win an argument on this site. I don't know why I even try.

At the end of the day, there are delivery services as platforms. PSN, Xbox Live, WiiWare. I get that they're kind of grandfathered into all of this, but to completely disregard Steam is really arrogant in my opinion. To say, "Nah, that ain't a platform because you can play on PC and Mac." Okay, then make a Steam PC and a Steam Mac category, similar to the PS3 PSN and the PS4 PSN. I just don't understand how you can discount an idea like that when there are plenty of examples of how that platform can be added.

Steam is not a hardware platform. It is just one location that people can buy games digitally. If the distribution and sale of games constitutes a platform, then that would mean GAMESTOP is a platform because they do the same thing as Steam, sell PC games and Mac games.

In fact, there are many PC and Mac games that are available on Steam that you can also buy directly in a store without any aspect of Steam included or needed. Where would that game then go in the database? Under Steam? Why? It has nothing to do with Steam at that point.

The goal of establishing a platform within the database is for the purposes of rule making and logical searching. Using a distribution point like Steam as a platform does not accomplish that goal as effectively as other available solutions. There are hundreds of digital distribution points for PC and Mac games. They do not represent hundreds of platforms to be created in the database.

Steam is not a standardized set of hardware parameters that PC or Mac games must adhere to. Generally speaking, how someone purchases a game offers little help in quantifying anything useful for purposes of adjudication.

Okay, you bring valid points. If this is true, then remove all "delivery service" platforms. If they are all just ways to buy games then get rid of WiiWare, PSN, Xbox Live, 3DS Shop, etc. Be consistent. Stop scooting around problems. If you're going to say one platform isn't a platform, fix all of them before you add anything new. Don't ask for suggestions when you're going to shut down arguably the most successful and popular one (in terms of sales/downloads).

As mentioned previously a couple times in this thread, the splitting/consolidating/sorting issue is a different matter and will be addressed at a later date. This thread is only in regard to what gaming platforms need to be added.

The absence of a gaming platform such as the Nintendo Switch is a legitimate problem and those issues are being addressed now - so problems are not being "scooted around."

No one is shutting down any gaming platform addition suggestions.

You really know how to ice-skate around an argument don't you? You did shut down my suggestion. And another thing, do you really think adding a new platform is more important than fixing the ones you already have? You have to see the inconsistency in this? You are completely avoiding the discussion and problem at hand.

You refuse to see why Steam is a platform. You refuse to even add my suggestion to the list to consider. You are shutting down my suggestion. People supported it in the thread. Look back at it. Steam is a platform to access video games just like PSN, Xbox Live, etc. Like I have also said many times in this thread. I'm not asking for splitting, consolidating. I am simply suggesting a platform that I think (and others) would be successful and popular among TG members. But only one member besides you has said that it shouldn't be considered. You've stated you want participation on tracks to promote the validity of the site. Do you really think that all of those old platforms would have more participation than Steam? Even set your opinion on whether Steam is a platform or not aside, when a new user finds this site and clicks submit score, are they going to go "Wow! Look, a category for Sinclair ZX Spectrum VEGA! ? Or are they going to see Steam and immediately log onto CS:GO, Rocket League, or GMod to submit a new attempt?

Please re-examine what I wrote. I said:

Unfortunately, you did not suggest a gaming platform addition, you suggested a gaming CATEGORY addition, which is a very different thing. Every actual gaming platform addition that was suggested in this thread was added to the list. None were "shut down."

Also, yes. Adding new gaming platforms is more important than sorting the ones that are already present.

While there may be some consolidation/sorting clean up needed for platforms already in the database, the fact is that game tracks can be created and submitted on in any/all of them.

You can submit for any PC game, under the PC platform. This includes all Steam PC games. The fact that a game came from Steam adds nothing in this context. Wherever a PC game came from adds nothing. Therefore there at least currently is a solution for all PC and Mac games listed under Steam.

However, you can not currently submit for any Nintendo Switch game. There is no Platform location for it. That is why adding new platforms is higher priority than sorting the current ones. Sorting the current ones does not add anything, it only changes where things are located. Adding Steam does not add ANY additional ability to create PC or Mac game tracks.

Your suggestion is fine if we were sorting the database by categories other than platform. Aside from distribution service, category sorting includes concepts like GENRE, YEAR RELEASED, DIFFICULTY, etc.

Twin Galaxies is interested in accuracy wherever possible. That is what it works toward. It cannot place Steam as a gaming platform because Steam is not a gaming platform.

The pre-existing PSN / XBOX LIVE etc. will eventually be folded into their appropriate platforms since they are not platforms either. But as was mentioned, this thread is not about consolidation or sorting. It is about adding new legitimate platforms.
