It appears that the new 2018 Gamer's Edition from GWR decided to try something different and has really downplayed Arcade / Retro high scores in favor of a focus more toward modern gaming achievement.

The result of this is that there is less of a presence of Twin Galaxies' historic database in the book.

Now as mentioned previously, Twin Galaxies does not dictate to GWR what to publish. It only grants permission to GWR to publish its data. So the GWR decision on what they want to put into their book is their decision alone.

They decided to do something new this year, and they will probably decided to do things differently again next year.

Their goal of course is to sell a book - and they will do whatever they feel is necessary to accomplish that. It is their bread and butter!

From a relationship standpoint, nothing changed between GWR and Twin Galaxies. We have a deal (non-economic) and it is what it is.

However, it is crystal clear from the community reaction that this years GWR publishing decision choices is very disappointing for many - and frankly, I agree. I and think something needs to be done in general.

Fortunately, the Twin Galaxies community has a very capable Head Custodian, who genuinely cares for the brand, it's membership, and all those who participate in the culture and activity of playing video games.

What that means is that Twin Galaxies is not a helpless entity. :)

So here is what we plan to do:

Twin Galaxies will once again start publishing its own certificates (this has already been in the works now for a few weeks - stay tuned)

Twin Galaxies will once again start publishing its own book.

Yes, Twin Galaxies will still maintain the relationship with GWR as always, however since we do not control the publishing or selection process there, I think it is important that we do have something that we control the entire publishing of. Something we can control the messaging of. That way we can make sure that people get more recognition.

Regarding the book -

The book will not be trying to compete with or replace the GWR gamers book series, at all.

The GWR gamers book series tries to cover a number of places / things. Buy it, it's different!

The TG book content will be comprised of a much more comprehensive set of only TG scores, as well as selected content from the member's Wall posts, photos, score discussions, etc.

Certainly there will be some professional editorial sections but I believe the book editorial should mostly reflect community contributions and highlight them.

This way, when someone takes the time to write something very useful / compelling on TG, it has an opportunity to get fully published and appreciated.

I think we can have an open discussion about what should and shouldn't go into the book - and in the end TG Admin will make the hard decisions, but the community can rest assured that its participation, thoughts and contributions will influence and guide the book (just as it has for the whole site.)

I think the book should also have special annual achievement recognition categories - with this hopefully evolving into the equivalent of the Academy Awards type event at some point.

The book will be a reflection of Twin Galaxies, and year on year it will evolve along with the interests of Twin Galaxies gaming community.

Obviously a book is going to take some time and money to execute, but it is well within our abilities.

In the meanwhile, CERTIFICATES will be coming much MUCH sooner.

On a different note - there are a number of very big things that are coming in the next 90 days or so that will continue to raise the profile of Twin Galaxies and its membership. We are working on them.

More info soon.

I am definitely a fan of TG doing their own thing, especially the book. I would also like to help by supplying photos. This time I'll remember though. :)

Jace, this response is exactly why I joined Twin Galaxies and why I remain loyal to Twin Galaxies.

Guinness is a "World Record" database.... from "biggest bubble gum bubble" to "tallest man" to "longest tongue".

While I'm disappointed with this years entries in the book, TG has to create its own path to success and recognition.

As a community, we have to rise above it.

I too commend TG for actively acting on this. I do have some questions and concerns though (sorry to be negative in all this positive light but it's my opinion.)

1, Why were the Guinness Challenges not included in the book? I know Jace stated they choose what they publish but, to not publish their own scores which THEY setup here seems like a pretty extreme move..? Are they trying to distance themselves from Twin Galaxies due to things like this:

https://www.twingalaxies.com/showthre...eetham-Ravella

2, What happens now with the Premium track stuff? It seems to me like they have asked you to make the database a bit of a mess/more complicated for new users to grasp and the site far more complicated for no reason.. should this now be reverted back? What happens with these and non premium with YOUR book. It's all very complicated and messy in my opinion and it sounds like GWR have really wasted your time asking for this to be a thing.

On the flip side, was this the reason they didn't bother with TG this year perhaps? Too lazy to sift through all the tracks and are waiting till next year when they have an easier snapshot to work with? Doesn't explain my first point made here though so probably not the case.

3, I feel this is adding a huge divide in what can be considered a "WR" now... Before we knew a TG world record was loosely considered a WR whereas if it is in Guinness, they search all the sites and places for the scores and ensure it is the highest recognised score. It's making it all much more complicated which i know isn't your fault but it's a shame...

4, Has TG been devalued by this move? I commonly see Jace refer to it as a "brand" well isn't that brand devalued slightly now with this? I don't mean to sound too negative but for me personally.. I came here to achieve a Guinness World Record not participate on one of the many score sites I am only on here no other sites as this is where you get into Guinness (although I've just joined speedrun.com as they have Ridge Racer speed runs so i guess that is now changing.) I know I am probably alone in this view but I think it is what many people come here to do. The link with GWR is what separated you from the other many score sites and it's a shame to see it has been lost, for this year at least anyway.

Again though, props to you for the innovation. I wish only the best for TG and that's why i voice my opinions, negative or otherwise.

No idea what their logic is. Haven't asked or talked to them about it.

Premium track stuff was not created due to GWR. It was created to satisfy the community concern regarding track dilution. The Premium track classification effectively returned Twin Galaxies database to the state it was in before users could create their own tracks.

So at that point the Premium track set was the "TG Original" track database, and now every track that has been added to Premium has been reviewed by admin (which is how original TG tracks got put into the database in the first place.)

Generally speaking, Twin Galaxies has the most stringent, documented and accountable recognition process for video game achievement. From Twin Galaxies perspective there is only a "Twin Galaxies World Record" and then there is everything else.

People can choose on their own how they want to value a TG World Record against anything else.

TG is not GWR and GWR is not TG. They are different and seek different goals. For instance, TG does not only list the #1 player in something. It recognizes more than that.

The link with GWR will always remain, but it is clear that as the world moves forward, TG and GWR will have slightly different vectors. GWR will continue to focus on selling books and TG will continue with its original function but also expand into tournament, league and greater eSports/player statistics functions as well.

Fair enough that TG and GWR are different, but by growing TG into tournaments, leagues, and greater eSports/player statistics function, I would anticipate that this kind of growth would also increase the opportunities for GWR to tap into TG's work. I love the golden age of arcade games, but I recognize that going forward, new generations won't have the same familiarity and proximity to these games - that's just inevitable. I applaud the work of TG in creating a book, but I'm also hopeful that the work of TG will resonate with new generations of gamers as video games evolve over time.
