We are pleased to announce that world renowned modder Benjamin J. Heckendorn
has been on the case and we will soon be seeing his progress into the investigation of the possibility of a repeatable 5.51 on Atari 2600 hardware.

A recent blog post has the latest details...

If Ben can't figure it out no-one can.

As a side note, calling the record the "first official speedrun" is, well, silly.

The game is scored on the completion time. That's the way it's done. That's not really a speedrun - those are for optional ways to play. If that's a speedrun, then, well, then speedruns are at least as old as the first Olympiad.

But it's awesome to see Ben Heck on this, and if anyone can get to the bottom of it, he can.

it gets sillier than that. an even more similiar analogy is superman for the atari vcs also only tracks time, since well, superman is invincible, he cant lose, the only question is how long it takes. so you have two games for the same system, both track time to completion, and superman came out a year before dragster.
also superman is an awesome game whereas dragster sucks, but i digress

According to my recollection, Omnigamer came across Dragster in his background research on the roots of speedruning. Dragster stood out as possibly the first speed run (if one is looking for earliest antecedents) not simply because it was timed, but more to the fact that Todd claimed to have used an exploit in the game that allowed him to achieve a better time/result than the developer's perfect game ("man vs computer")
