Question about high score save kits

With all the talk recently about hacked boards and fake romsets, I got to thinking about my own Space Invaders cabinet.

I installed a high score save kit on my Space Invaders cabinet. It is a custom chip that sits between the CPU and the PCB (at least I think it is the CPU). The cool thing is it contains additional games:

  • Space Invaders
  • Space Invaders Deluxe
  • Jatre Specter
  • Lunar Rescue
  • Space Laser
  • Balloon Bomber
  • Galaxy Wars
  • Super Earth Invasion

My question is does this modification disqualify the machine from being used to submit scores for Space Invaders?

The game plays the same as far as I can tell, but I am no expert. I was wondering if anyone out there has experience with these high score save kits.

In the past, via the discretion of Arcade referee days of TG, I was told that my 39-1 JAMMA board on my cocktail would NOT qualify under an Arcade submission track.

Even though my cabinet was custom built, nothing is modified otherwise, as far as I know. All 39 games each happen to have high score save states within, as compared to several of its counterpart arcade games with original boards/ROMs that never did save high scores.

If MAME had its own category, and now that Rasberry Pi and JROK does, why not Multi-game JAMMA PCB?

That thing is basically a multicart for that midway platform. Multicarts seem to be accepted here without raising any eyebrows if the game code hasn't been changed.

If the game code *is* changed then what was changed? why? and does it make any difference to the gameplay?

It's easy to remove right? If you ever record a Space Invaders score just remove it.

Yeah, totally like a multicart. Never thought of it like that!

I tell you, for $55 US, this was an amazing investment. It was easy to install and turns my Space Invaders machine into a gaming beast. Sure, the games are not the very best ever made, but the high scores are saved and some of them are very enjoyable.

I love my space invaders cabinet!

Thats awesome. People sometimes forget in these discussions that the primary purpose of any of this equipment is to bring people enjoyment.

I have wondered the same thing. My PacMac has a 6-PAC daughter Card in it. I love it. But I don’t know if it disqualified me from submitting scores?

I also have a DK Remix Board in my DK Cabinet.
