Viewers tuning in to watch the Turkey Champions League were greeted by an extremely uncommon pick that seemed to pay off.

While it might not be the most watched region in professional League of Legends, that doesn’t mean that the Turkey Champions League can’t bring the heat, and today, mid laner for SuperMassive eSports Lee “GBM” Chang-seok certainly turned on the fire.

A former Korean pro, GBM made his way to North America in 2015, playing for NRG Esports and building his profile to fans in the west. In 2017, he made his way to Europe, where he was both a player and a substitute for Team Vitality for a short period, before making his way back to NA to play for Challenger team eUnited. When that team was unable to enter the NA LCS, they disbanded, and GBM made his way to the TCL to play for SuperMassive eSports.

A lot of teams are playing Galio in the mid lane, as a very tanky character who can’t be burst down by traditional mid lane mages, providing their team with yet another big body to get in the way of the enemy. So how do you deal with this champion? Well, if you’re GBM, you pick Illaoi.

Rarely seen at all, and almost always in the top lane when she does make an appearance, Illaoi offers a different way to deal with tanks, rather than attempting to burst them down from a distance, she can go toe-to-toe with them, becoming just as tanky as they are while also outputting some ridiculous damage. Just check out this clip of GBM turning a three man gank on its head and somehow coming out alive.

SuperMassive would go on to win their match, thanks in large part to GBM and his unconventional champion choice.
