Retro video game fanatic breaks 20 year record

Byline: Richard Lyons

London -- August 25, 2005 -- A Cheam man with a passion for 1980s arcade games
became a world record breaker this month when he
achieved the best-ever score at a vintage video game.

Nick Hutt of Brocks Drive broke the world record score
for 1980s arcade game Space Harrier at the Classic
Gaming Expo UK 2005 which was held at Fairfields Hall
in Croydon on August 13.

The achievement will be entered in the official video
game and pinball book of world records after his
top-scoring game was watched by referees from
monitoring group Twin Galaxies.

Mr Hutt who notched up a score of 35 774 740 said: "It
is really strange it doesn't sink in straight away. The
previous high score was set 20 years ago and it has
stayed there all that time."

The 34-year-old developed a love of 1980s arcade games
when he began playing them at seaside resorts while on
holiday with his family.

What started as a joy in playing the retro games then
developed into a desire to collect and preserve them
when he bought a full-sized arcade machine version of
Space Harrier.

The machine which has a seat that moves along with the
action of the game was bought from France and is one
of only six left in the UK.

In the run up to the Expo Mr Hutt practised by playing
the game every day and can complete all of its 18
levels nearly each and every time.

More than just a source of fun however his enthusiasm
for pioneering video games such as Space Harrier
Outrun and Pac Man is also an exercise in childhood
nostalgia.

"I think it reminds me of when I was a lot younger and
going away on holiday he said.

There are good memories there. Actually having one and
restoring it is nice you are also preserving something
that's part of history."
