Kelly’s Calling
Kelly Tharp of Sellersburg, Ind., attempted to go down in the history books for Q*bert, which he played at the Challenge Arcade in Reading, Pa., for a 44 hours stint. From February 20 through 22, Kelly racked up 19.9 million points.
He was required to record his entire performance on videotape and take a drug test immediately following the game’s completion. After the tape and drug test are evaluated by the editors of Twin Galaxies’ Official Video Game and Pinball Book of World Records, Kelly will likely become the sixth place champion in the all-time Q*Bert records.
Since the beginning of organized video game playing, Q*Bert has been recognized as the most difficult game to marathon play. Kelly reported that, before he stopped playing, his eyes could no longer see the screen, and he was helpless to stop his men from dying even though he was wide awake and had plenty of stamina left.
Kelly has already won his way into the game history books by taking the Tapper Marathon crown, lasting 18 hours and scoring 9,437,400 points. He also cites numerous other high-point accomplishments, though these were never verified by Twin Galaxies.
Many players have failed to beat the 22-year old Q*Bert world record of 33,273,520 points set by Bob Gerhardt of Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada in 1983.
