 At left is one of the latest posters commissioned by Billy Mitchell as a gift to the gaming hobby. Only 20 copies, individually numbered in sequence from 1 to 20, were produced to commemorate the Space Wars 2008 Championship. The poster was designed by the noted graphic artist and singer/songwriter, C.J. Hoose, of Fairfield, Iowa.
Issued under the auspices of Twin Galaxies, the poster is the latest edition in a long tradition that dates back to poster #1, published on August 1, 1982, commemorating the high score champions of that "Golden" era of gaming. In the growing video game collectibles market, a mint copy of that first poster has sold for $100. See images of all the posters below.
Billy Mitchell Creates More Memorabilia to Document Video Game and Pinball History
Fairfield, Iowa -- May 26, 2008 -- If Billy Mitchell has his way, collecting video game memorabilia will become a significant hobby in the 21st century, far outstriping major collecting trends of the 20th century, like collecting comic books or baseball cards.
And, Billy Mitchell is not just waiting for it to happen by itself, he's actually creating the stuff that future video game historians may pay top dollar for -- like limited edition posters, unique hot sauce bottles and rare medallions celebrating feats of video game glory.
At last December's Texas Pinball Festival, 20 lucky show attendees went home with a copy of a limited edition poster created by Mitchell exclusively for the show. And each of the 20 posters will have its own registration number, i.e. #1 of 20, #2 of 20 and so on....
"I feel that the era of the video game has hardly begun and we are pioneers who have barely stepped through the door into the Cyber-Age," explains Mitchell. "People will be playing video games and pinball for hundreds of years to come, so I want to leave historic memorabilia to commemorate what we did in our own time to show future generations that our contribution to the heritage of electronic gaming was significant."
Mitchell has already been creating memorabilia for a few years and has been issuing his free collectors items under the auspices of Twin Galaxies, the world wide video game scorekeeper who publishes Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records.
Walter Day, Chief Editor at Twin Galaxies, says: "I believe there will come a day in the not-too-far future when collecting video game memorabilia becomes a big deal and a price guide comes into existence. At that time, Billy Mitchell's series of commemorative posters and hot sauce labels may become very valuable."
Mitchell is recognized as "the world's most famous video game player." He was crowned the "Player-of-the-Century" at the 1999 Tokyo Game Show and was the most-decorated video gamer to appear in the U.S. edition of the Guinness Book of World Records back during the mid-80s. He was a founding member of the U.S. National Video Game Team, which, in 1983, was history's first professional video game team. His most noteworthy accomplishment, however, was achieving history's first "perfect" game on Pac-Man in 1999.
Of the years, Mitchell has commissioned many of Twin Galaxies' most famous posters. And, today, most of them are completely out of circulation. "Even though you'd expect Twin Galaxies to have a copy of each poster stored away in its archives, it doesn't," laments Day. "In fact, there are numerous players who have collections of Twin Galaxies posters more complete than the collection in Twin Galaxies' own archives."
Brian Kuh, for example, a former investment banker from New York City, who recently worked at the world-famous Funspot Family Fun Ctr. in Weirs Beach, NH, has a collection to, at least, rival Twin Galaxies'.
Kuh has more than 25 different Twin Galaxies posters and 13 of the 30 different commemorative hot sauce labels issued so far by Billy Mitchell. Kuh's collection is special because he managed to obtain numerous items that are #1's in their respective series.
But the biggest collection of Twin Galaxies' memorabilia is held firmly in the hands of Mark Alpiger of Louisville, Kentucky, who started his collection in 1985. Alpiger's collection, Walter Day admits, is much larger than the holdings still in Twin Galaxies' possession.
Though Alpiger has only a few hot sauce bottles -- those commemorating the Alien Hominid championship, the Dreamhack LAN attempt and the Funspot 2005 event -- he excels in vintage Twin Galaxies posters. In his collection he owns three (3) copies of Twin Galaxies' first poster, issued on August 1, 1982. Also, he owns many editions that TG has no copies of -- even a copy of the 1985 Video Game Masters Tournament in mint condition, which Alpiger believes could be worth up to $100.
But this may be just the beginning, believes Day. There may be more Twin Galaxies collectors out there than we realize.
Billy Mitchell adds to Day's thoughts by saying: "It adds richness to the legacy of gaming. I like to think that we are adding fun to the study of video game history by creating more memorabilia to document the milestones in gaming."
Billy's campaign to immortalize the champions of the video game and pinball world is a continuation of the historical legacy started by Twin Galaxies nearly 25 years ago.
