Funspot X Resulted in 48 New World Records
This Event Establishes New Mark: "Most Records During A Single Event"
With 48 new world records, Funspot X sets a New Mark for "Most Records During A Single Event"

Fairfield, Iowa -- July 4, 2008 -- The Twin Galaxies Board of Referees has examined all the results of the 10th Annual Funspot Classic Arcade Championship and believe that all the scores have been tallied.

Published below are the new world records which have been submitted to the Guinness World Records - Gamer's Edition 2009, due out in the early part of next year.

Twin Galaxies has informed Guinness World Records that the 48 World Records verified during this 4-day event are the most world records ever logged at a single video game championship. Though this
"Most Records During A Single Event" category was not actively noted during earlier years, it is our understanding that on at least one prior year thirty (30) new world records were documented. So, this year, with 48 new world records, sets a new record for "Most Records During A Single Event."

Noteworthy Achievements

Aart van Vliet, of The Netherlands, reached the "kill-screen" on Ms. Pac-Man on two separate occassions during the weekend, scoring 885,920 on one of those games to take over 5th-place in the all-time Ms.Pac-Man rankings. But, even more amazingly, he reached the "kill-screen" on his first man -- without dying!!

Tony Temple, of Ashbourne, United Kingdom, scored at least two games over one million points on Missile Command, with a verified attempt of 1,122,665 points and an unverified 1.8 million that was partially witnessed. Though neither record attempt eclipsed Tony's already-standing world record mark of 1,967,830 points, both Funspot scores were superior to any other score held by his competitors in the Twin Galaxies database.

Two Kill-Screens in One Day; Six Kill-Screens Over the weekend
On Saturday, Abdner Ashman and Aart Van Vliet both achieved Ms.Pac-Man kill-screens on the same day. Except for the fact that another player played for a small amount of time between their games, the two performances were, essentially, performed back-to-back, a unique development never witnessed before. Possibly even more amazing was the fact that Aart reached the Ms. pac-Man kill-screen five times over the course of the four-day event, another unprecedented achievement.

Kicker Rivalry - Chris Mansfield, of Seattle, Washington and Greg Laue of Des Moines, Iowa, pitted their respective skills on Kicker to put the high score almost out of reach on Kicker. Taking about 12 hours, Chris Mansfield broke the 20-million mark while Greg Laue, who ran out of time due to Funspot closing, reached approximately 18 million points.
Here is a quote from Chris Mansfield: "Just a little statistical info for you for accuracy's sake... My game ran exactly 15 hours 40 minutes, including the 25 minutes needed to kill off 115 extra men before Funspot closed. Start time was 8:40am Friday and end time was 12:20am Saturday.

Greg Laue's game started at approximately 10:35am Saturday and he achieved an even 18 million points, ending his game at exactly 12:20am as well on Sunday morning after spending about 17 minutes killing off 77 extra men. His scoring pace was nearly identical to mine, but since he started nearly 2 hours later than I did he had no hope of catching me even though I know he could have done so given 2 more hours to play."

Contra Rivalry - Mark Cooper, of Newport News, Virginia and Isaiah "TriForce" Johnson, of Brooklyn, NY, dueled for laurels as the "inaugural record holder" on Contra, with TriForce ending up on top, 470,??? to 386,300.

Super Mario Bros. Rivalry
The fiercest rivalry of all was seen on Super Mario Bros. Mike Skupny and Isaiah "TriForce" Johnson dueled for one entire day as the title changed hands a record five times in under 24 hours.

Amazing Galaxian Game
Aart van Vliet, of the Netherlands, achieved the highest Galaxian score we have ever seen performed live during any event attended by Twin Galaxies. Score: 799,680 points.

Kill-Screen on Donkey Kong
Scott Kessler, of North Carolina, started playing Donkey Kong less than a year ago. However, at Funspot X, he reached the "kill-screen" and scored 895,400 points to take over third place on the all-time Donkey Kong leaderboard.

Here's a quote from Scott Kessler: "I'm from Monroe, North Carolina. I had only played Donkey Kong a few times in arcades before I started playing seriously on August 27th of 2007. I reached the kill screen for the first time on November 10th of 2007. At that point, I took a break and worked on other things for a few months. I started playing again on March 10th of 2008 and played pretty regularly right up until Funspot X. During this time, I worked on point pressing techniques and my consistency to ensure that I could put up a 3rd place kill screen score live at the event."

Frogger World Record
Pat Laffaye, of Westport, CT, finally broke Donald Hayes' long standing world record on Frogger, scoring 599,110 points. Pat diligently focused on breaking this world record for many years, attending events in Florida, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
