Kijiji Horrors Pt. 1

Brace yourselves for the sheer madness of....

Part 1: The Kijiji-ning

Kijiji describes itself as "Canada’s most popular local classifieds site. Kijiji offers a convenient, fun, and easy way for people in the same city to buy, sell, trade and help each other out in areas such as goods, cars, services, housing and jobs."

But if you're a gamer, be it a classic arcade gamer or console gamer or any gamer really, you know the real deal... Kijiji is the place where you go to sift through hordes of terrible ads full of bloated prices, monstrous MAME creations and "A+++ ULTRA RARE" Marios Bros NES carts priced so high you'll get a bad case of vertigo.

Being the benevolent man that I am, I've waded through the unwashed masses and throngs of thirsty hucksters looking to hock their wares to highlight some of the best of the worst for you. So without further ado, here's the cream of the crap...

The CryPod 2000

Just look at this monstrosity... this thing looks like a generation 1 IPod that feels like if it could talk it'd be saying
"please kill me".

This thing started as some kind of Wii store display and was modified with a woefully low spec computer to be a MAME cabinet. Who could get past the fact that it's gigantic and takes up more room than an average arcade cab on top of having an atrocious control scheme that would require you to stand inches away from a 32" TV screen. It gives me a headache just looking at it.

Taste Invaders II Deluxe

This next piece is a real heart breaker, when I came across this, my heart lept with excitement, as it was a very nice looking Space Invaders II Deluxe cab after all, that is until I saw the price of well over $1000. On top of that and the real pant kicker in all of it was after opening up the ad only to find out that this was not, in fact, a working Space Invaders II Deluxe cabinet (which, in my opinion is one of the most good looking cabinets there is with a real classic feel to it), but rather it WAS a working Space Invaders II cabinet that the monster (seller) had gutted and turned into a ***** MAME machine.

This seller had even had the audacity to post a video showing the machine "working" where you could be treated to nearly 60 second long loading times on a MAME menu that had me gently weeping at the screen "why.... why god did you do this?". Some people have no taste or appreciation for art.

Attachment 19620
You like sweet grey textures? I hope you do, cause you're going to be looking at it for 45 seconds every time you want to change games.....madness.

Operation Ralf: The Terrible Tragedy of Taito

Have you ever thought to yourself, "You know what I need? A gigantic machine with the most specific control set possible so I can only play a handful of games on it!"

Well if you did, the Operation Ralf is for you. Tired of trying to play Donkey Kong with a keyboard or a few buttons and a joystick? Why not try just 1 trigger and a whoooooooooooole lotta patience!? "Perfect for MAME!", yes indeed.. and the whole half dozen shooter games you can play with this extremely limited setup. I mean, I love Chiller and Cheyenne as much as the next guy but come on, this isn't perfect for anything other than to restore an Operation Wolf cabinet and the seller knows it.

But that doesn't stop him from selling this dusty POS that has been stored outside an Italian villa for two decades. It's a real fix-er-uper folks! On the plus side it comes with absolutely nothing in it, not even a monitor and it can be yours for the low low price of a few hundred dollars! Someone please hold me back from this great investment that I surely will not regret.

Deal Fighter 2: Ripoff Edition

This is another extremely common sight on Kijiji, the reseller. These people buy these gaudy, overpriced "multi-cabs" from a handful of manufacturers that sell them at an absurd markup like $5000+ for only a handful of game. While I can fault all the sellers above for their crappy MAME creations, at LEAST those people are offering a decent value and no limit on the number of games you can play with their pieces of crap. These things typically come with maybe a few hundred games and while the quality and make of the overall cabs are fairly nice, the sheer cost vs value of what you get is ridiculous. Take for example, this Street Fighter 2 cab, that the seller claims they bought originally for just over $4000 and is now looking to pass those savings on to you, years later, well beyond the warranty at a supremely discounted rate of... $3750. Think of it folks, you save more money than the number of games you can play on this rip-off. AMAZING VALUE A+++

And with that, I will end the journey for now, but rest assured, I am always watching and waiting to spot more horrible deals and terrible creations that fly in the face of good taste and reason.

Stay tuned soon for more Horrors of Kijiji!
