February Game of the Month and Tournament

Hello everyone. Each month, I find a game that isn't already in the game database and ask others for their support to help fund tracks. This month is no different but has one special twist. I'm going to launch at tournament to support participation and competition for this game and its underlying tracks.

With the Winter Olympics only a few days away, why not have our own version of the Olympics here within our video game community. I found a game to accommodate multiple platforms (PS2 and XBOX) that is also released in NTSC and PAL regions. Without further delay, I'm pleased to announce the February Game of the Month is .........

    MOWE Tournament I

Placeholder for rules, prizes, and FAQ. If you have any questions, send me a PM and I can post the question and response here, for everyone's benefit.

    Tournament Leaderboard

The tournament leaderboard is based on the total points achieved for all 15 Torino events. The competitor with the most points is the MOWE Tournament Winter Olympic Champion. The will be honored with galas and firework displays all across their country!!!

    Confirmed Competitors (five)
    - Austin Blair
    - Golden87
    - MyOwnWorstEnemy
    - Rogerpoco
    - Timmell

    How to Get Started

    1) Acquire the game! Whether you beg, borrow, or steal it is up to you. I recommend acquiring through purchase. I've seen them in retro gaming stores and Amazon for under $5 USD. Any version of the game on PS2 and XBOX is eligible for this tournament. Any difference in gameplay by region is considered the equivalent of a genetic advantage and not a synthetic performance enhancer. Such is life so we all just deal with it.

    2) Select a Country! The number of participants is limited to the number of countries listed in the game. To claim your country, choose one available from the list below and post a response to this blog to officially claim it as your Winter Olympic team. Add the country flag for easy identification of the claim in your post. A team can only be claimed once. No duplicates. The countries available are listed below. I will update the list of who claimed the team periodically, but please check the posts below before selecting a country.

    - France
    - Germany

    - Japan
    - Korea (MyOwnWorstEnemy)
    - Netherlands
    - Norway
    - People's Republic of China
    - Poland

    Competition Rules

The tournament rules are dependent on the number of competitors. The gradual implementation of these rules is meant to be commensurate with fair competition and prizes.

    1) Tournament starts at on Thursday, 2/15 @ 12am EST and ends on Wednesday, 2/28 @ 11:59pm EST.

    2) Video evidence for each performance must be submitted to Twin Galaxies for adjudication. Only entries submitted during tournament time period is eligible for recognition in the MOWE Tournament. Performance becomes official once it successfully passes the Twin Galaxies adjudication process, and is accepted on the Torino 2016 track and game leaderboards. Performances submitted before or after tournament start and end dates, regardless of Twin Galaxies adjudication outcome is not eligible for this tournament.

    3) The following rules are in effect to promote spirited back-and-forth competition and prevent sandbagging and last minute submission dumping. Which rule is in effect is determined by the number of competitors.

    * 3a (9 or more competitors) - Groups with Shotgun Start
The competitors will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Each group will compete in five events for five days. Competitors must submit their best performances for these events at the end of the five days. They will move on and compete on the next series of five events until all events are completed. Competitors are not allowed to resubmit for any of the events once the five day period ends. This rule attempts to replicate the advantages and disadvantages of pecking order found in most Olympic events. This shotgun start approach will give all members of the group an equal amount of advantages and disadvantages.

    * 3b (6-8 competitors) - Tournament Freeze and 48 Hour Improvement Period
Competitors are free to submit at any time during the open period of the tournament (2/15 12am - 2/26 11:59pm EST). For the next 48 hours, the competitors are allowed to improve their performances with up to but no more than five additional submissions for any of the 15 events. Submissions are counted on a first in basis. Therefore any submission after the fifth, which is uploaded to the Twin Galaxies submission forum, will not be considered during the 48 hour improvement period. The improvement period begins on 2/27 12am EST and ends on 2/28 11:59pm EST.

    * 3c (5 or less competitors) – Free for All

Competitors are free to submit as many time as desired during the entire duration of the tournament (2/15 12am - 2/28 11:59pm EST). There are no other restrictions that the competitors need abide other than following the submission guidelines.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When will the tracks be created for this game and for which platforms?

A: I'll draft up the track rules and post for community support at a minimum of two days prior to the start of the contest. The game is available for both PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Its also available in both NTSC and PAL. I will incur the initial cost of setting up the tracks for all these iterations depending on the needs of the competitors. Currently (as of 2/8/18), all three competitors only need tracks for the PlayStation 2 platform in NTSC format.

Q: Can I practice the game in preparation for the competition?

A: Yes!!!! Practice is encouraged and recommended!

Q: How does the tournament rankings / standings be determined?

A: The tournament rankings will be determined by the total points earned from all 15 events. Therefore, it is possible to finish first on 14 events by a small margin and not finish 1st in the tournament, if you do very poorly on one event. Scoring is similar to a decathlon.

95% sure I have a copy on the way, Son works next town over, I called and they have it at a game store.

I like the US, not overly patriotic, but I live here so I may as well stick with what I know.

Put me down for the Stars and Stripes!

Son will probably play as well, and I've pm'd a couple buddies trying to get them interested-this kind of thing just seems fun to me, we should have more of it, active competition on games.

I'm slow to see/notice things, make sure to let me know, I'll help pay for the tracks, no worries!

I still think people should be "rewarded" for starting tracks, rather than it costing them points, but is NBD.

That's great... the more participants the better. I'm going to PM some folks to see if I can drum up some more interest. I'll draft out the track rules which we will use for the tournament. I'll tag you and the other participants for feedback on the track rules and submission point contribution. I'm looking forward to the tournament and some friendly competition.

It's a really great game, I feel like I stepped forward in time, ha!

We really need more competitors, this game is on the shelf at every game store I have called.

Could be a lot of fun, I hope we get more people involved, thanks for starting this one up!

At your pace Roger, I can see you competing on four decades worth of video game goodness.

Hopefully we can drum up a few more competitors before the opening ceremonies. Maybe the start of the Winter Olympics tomorrow will inspire folks to compete electronically like our real life athletes. Medals and monetary prizes are up for grabs if we get a lot of participants!

The game includes downhill skiing (4 events), bobsled (2 events), luge, ski jumping (2 events), cross country, biathlon, Nordic combined, and speed skating (3 events). The gameplay is pretty good. My only complaint so far is the repetitive and annoying announcers. This is a common problem for most sports games made around that era.

    Hey Roger,

I'm still mulling over the track rules, including difficulty setting. I'm going to post a draft of the rules either tonight or tomorrow. It will be open for review and feedback.

I'm going to go through a test run on the three difficulty settings and see which one makes the most sense for this completion and after (score chasing). The least likely track rule is probably the 'any difficulty setting allowed'. Usually that means everyone plays on easy; and easy difficulty on this game might be too easy. The likely difficulty is either medium or hard. None of this is set in stone but that's what I'm leaning toward at the moment.

    Quick Update!

I've gone through nearly all 15 events. With a few minor exceptions, the difficulty settings determine the strength of the AI competitors. Its harder to place in the top three (gold, silver, or bronze) on the hard difficulty setting than easy. However, your performance on any of the settings is the same. The only exceptions I've found is for alpine skiing and ski jumping. The easy difficulty on alpine skiing allows more missed gates before disqualification. Since a missed gate results in a time penalty, there's no advantage for missing gates. For ski jumping, the wind effect has less impact on easy difficulty. Since the wind appears to be random, consistency is better at easy difficulty but the longer jumps might be achieved at the hard. The best I can tell, there might be a risk / reward situation with ski jumping.

Despite what I said in my earlier post, the track rules will likely allow the player to select any difficulty setting. I'll have the rules drafted this tomorrow and solicit feedback.

I picked up my copy at a 2nd and Charles. Hopefully you'll be able to get a copy and join the competition. So far we have four confirmed competitors. Even if you get a copy after the tournament begins, there's plenty of time to play and submit.

I’m glad I have 2 weeks to play around with this game and figure out how to actually play it. The few events I’ve played around with were a total disaster.
