Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for WR?
I don't know about you, but when I'm working on my game (Vs. Super Mario Bros.) it is not as fun as it used to be. It can be real stressful, and I get very mad at myself when I don't perform well. The only joy I get comes after I improve my score. It feels like I'm playing against myself, not playing against the game. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
Makes 100% sense. I started hating games that I used to love but decided the other day to take some of them less serious and enjoy them again. Just trying to improve my own scores on those. I wanted to make a similar post the other day but kept it to myself...
But when you do get that scores that's been eluding you its the best feeling ever. But when it gets beaten, you're back to square one again. That's what makes gaming so much fun.
Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
Depends upon what it is. In many ways games that I haven't touched or enjoyed in years are brought to life again when going for a record.
But... I had a back and forth on one particular title where to improve the score it required mindless point pressing by shooting at a non-moving target for about 20 minutes during the attempt. Once my rival resorted to the technique, I just walked away from playing the title because I had zero interest in playing the game like that, where mashing a button for 20 minutes non stop took more time than the rest of the run.
So, the story is basically that if I find it exciting or it motivates me to go for a certain score, doing a WR run increases the fun I have. In some cases however, it makes it less fun. So, I go with the former. If it isn't fun for me, if I'm not enjoying it, I just don't do it.

I could only imagine that feeling would be taken up a notch with games you can do marathons on.

No. For 'tis then ye take ye strategy apart, examine each piece, and put it back together again. 'Tis also ye time hold classes to teach others how to play ye favourite game.
"Nouw ain't that a shame. And just what did you have in the palm of yer hands?"
"Ah, you wouldn't believe it...but I had me a real...leprechaun??? A live leprechaun! I'm rich. No more worries..."
[still looking for a stand-in for MGC]

Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
I experienced that a few years ago with Rolling Thunder (MAME).
I had massive fun getting further and further in the game.
Then I beat the game and started working on upping my score.
My goal was beating the arcade WR at the time.
Then I got some tremendous competition from Darren Evans and we kept competing and pushing our scores up. But after a while it seemed like I wasn't enjoying the game itself anymore. I was just point-pressing the same stages over and over, got either bored with that or going nuts when I made a mistake.
In the meanwhile Darren racked up an astonishing score, and while I believe that I am technically capable of beating it I am not willing (capable?) to bring up the mental effort/strain to even try.

There's a point where it can get frustrating and not fun. When it gets to that point take a break and play something else to regroup and refocus. Before breaking a record, I would always just try to break my personal best until I got to world record territory. A lot of people get too frustrated and give up. The people who don't give up are the record holders.

This is exactly the way I see it.
There was this one game where I set the WR on and I made hundreds of attempts on it, almost gave up several times, but pushed through anyways and finally got it.
I reason why I succeed is because I NEVER give up!

May be... but to me it isn't about not being determined. I've spent hundreds of hours on a single title to get a record. I'm fine with that. Matter of fact, it makes the victory all that much more significant.
What I'm talking about is spending hours point pressing or something which to me is just stupid. It's not fun. And if the record is based upon mindless point pressing (like in the case mentioned above, shooting at a static object while stationary which you could do with your eyes closed), then the significance of that record drops to near zero for me.
