Is the Mario Bros record in the TG database correct? 3,000,000+ seems impossible for this game at default settings unless the Japanese ROM set ( which allows you to keep winning extra men ) was used.
Thanks,
Allan

I had formally challenged this score about 9 months ago.
In short, no, it's the USA rom set...factory settings.
I was told there was no tape or ref witness of that score...cuz it's from around 1983-1985, but was told the guy played at some event with TG ref(s) present where he stopped at 1+ million.
I personally still find it a tad hard to swallow...given no one else apparently has gotten 1+ million...but I'll take it for what it is. It does take great skill at the game to reach that mark.
My personal high for mario brothers goes back to around 1983 where I had a temp world record of around 525k on the title.
I have played it some in MAME and set what would be a high score for MAME..but haven't submitted it cuz I would like to get 700+k before submitting. :P
hmm, maybe that's one to add on my summer plans to play list. hehe
If memory serves correct , the game goes 'Haywire' at 990,000 , I think. Something like 'Defender'. But still possible( I think ) to play on.
Anyone who got this far can verify this , or not!
Fairly sure though.....

Hello Alex/Rick:
I'm sending Perry Rodgers a link to this thread. He had already started some groundwork for testing which I think I shared with Rick awhile back. At the very least he can update with where his testing has reached, or contribute his recollections from years back that might help explain the score.
Robert
Well after posting, I see Rick has a score at MARP which is over 1m.
So I guess he is one to comment regarding my above comments/recollections.

Honestly, I found it hard to believe myself when I achieved my 3.4M score...It was one very long zone. The game lasted 3 hours 45 minutes - I scored about 1M / hour. Standard settings - 3 Men, 1 Bonus. While I can't back it up with a video tape or copies of documentation, I can point you to my Guiness Book score of 1.7M in competition, and my 1M+ score at Funspot a few years ago.
There are other players I know of that have scored 1M+, or had the skill to do so:
Spencer Oren 1.2M. Darren Harris also told me that he had rolled it a couple of times, so may have had a 2M+ score. I'm certain that there are others.
Eric Ginner was my top competition at the time. Interestingly, he at the time also challenged my score claiming that the game slowed down and stopped near 1M points. I have never once witnessed this though. I knew of Eric of course, but had not spoken to him. However, we both played MB at the Guiness contest in San Jose - He scored 800K+, and then I played my 1.7M game, and so left no doubt that the game can be rolled.
MB is basically a pattern game. I developed my own patterns however and there are some subtleties to the game that are key to achieving high scores. The real challenge is how you recover and having patience when a pattern is interrrupted and all breaks loose. I often practiced this, letting all the pests out, not using POW, and getting out of jams. POW conservation is also key, as is knowing where you can jump fireballs and run under fighterflies.

Hi Perry:
Thanks for responding to the thread. It's good to hear from you again as well. You will be there with us in spirit at Funspot next week !!
Just curious...did you ever manage to finish "Road Fighter" on the PS1, reaching the finish line ?

Yes, Mario Brothers does get a tad odd up there. Near 999,990 or perhaps cuz hitting phase 99....not sure which causes it cuz the way I play I average right around 10k/phase anyway.Quote:

Anyway, what happens is the game gets slow for a bit...jittery and slow. I remember seeing this happen with the arcade game once also where we set the game to give 5 start men instead of only 3 and I was able to crack 1 million on it.
Anyway(hehe), the game is still playable when slow like this. It also has the exact same behavior in MAME.
After you clear 1 million and/or have played a handful of "phase 99"s....after you hit phase 99 all phases are called "99"....but you still go through the cycle of phases including the bonus phases, the game seems to return to "normal" speed.
it's very odd.
I remember about 5 or 6 years ago, on the OLD Twin Galaxies forum, talking about Mario Brothers. I can't quite remember what we were talking about but it has something to do with the World Record for this game. And at the same time there was a upload high score for MB by Perry Rodgers of 700+. At least I believe it was from Perry. It was only on the MARP page for a short while and it was yanked for some reason or another. Maybe Perry didn't want anyone to see his patterns?? But guess what, I still have that recording. I will have to view the recording and make sure it's the right one.
However, I would be willing to share this replay with anyone who would like to view it. That is ONLY if Perry doesn't mind sharing his patterns. Otherwise I'll keep this to myself.
Kinda like the way the great 'Hisa-Chan' pulled his score of 14m+ on 1942 from MARP?
Some MARP players have this INP. I don't. I guess you can go to MARP, and ask them to send it to you?
Tell you what , it sure beats the current TG 'official' WR....and then some!
