Awesome game isnt it :) Next on my list is a tempest machine to sit beside the Super Pac.
Tips at your lvl would be to work a small area of the board.
Control your rate of fire....(dont just hold the button down).
Learn the best area to sit when in trouble...(where the baddies have to flip farther to hit you rather than shorter)
Use your super zapper about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the screen depending on situation.
Most of all it will take lots of play to advance to the higher sets. Its been a long time since I was at the top of my game on tempest, but timing your fire becomes critical on later sets.
Have fun
Thanks, I just uped my score to 81,000.
What a great game to get in to.
I love it. Although I only play for recreation. I don't care about score, or submissions. I have my game for that.
Good luck Ben...Enjoy Tempest

If you can, try to get out to Funspot to watch Richard Marsh play - he is incredible.

Some good tips on that Tempest page. There is one error though, with the Super Zapper. While you only get 1 per level, you do get a 2nd one, sort of. It will destroy only one enemy. I usually save it to use at the end of the level to zap a fuseball at the end of the lane. (I'm not that great at Tempest though, can usually get about a 1/3 of the way thru the red level...maybe with some practice, I can get better :) )
Actually Laszlo Takacs is the best Tempest player I've ever seen. He can go well into the green levels on an initial level 9 game. But he mentioned a friend of his from Columbus, Ohio who was at least at his level who could score 2M on Tempest.Quote:

This strategy will maximize your points per level. (So if you're starting on level 9, you would want to start this strategy on level 10.)
On levels 11 through 16, a great time to hit the superzapper is when the fuseball has surfaced (reached the near end of the level). When you hit the superzapper, you will either go directly to the next level, or face one more enemy (almost always a fuseball) that you can also superzap to exit the level. (After level 17, this strategy will not work.)
I have read the Tempest StrategyWiki, but I think it can be improved upon. For one thing, there are no tips on how to play the orange levels (17 to 32).

The following URL, off of Eric Clayberg's web page, is pretty much on the money for Tempest advice. He is a former world-record holder on Tempest; I've never had the pleasure of meeting him. Anyway, the link is:

This page is a few years old though and most of the links on the bottom of that page are dated.
