Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
For me the funnest part about going for high scores or competitive gaming in general is find out techniques and secrets that allow you to break the WR's. Also learning the layout/patterns of some game (mostly platformers) is another thing that I enjoy. However this is all good but once you have all this info its a case of putting it all together in a WR run and this is where the frustration comes into play for me, you have all the information and know how to play the level/strategies perfectly but you still cant get it together to push your score over the WR mark or personal mark that you may have set for yourself. For me this is when games stop being fun- when you know what to do but just can't do it all together for a WR run
That being said, as several people have mentioned previously once you do put it all together and get that WR it is the best feeling that I have ever felt playing games because you know FINALLY for 1 game everything has fallen into place.

Yeah that can also be frustrating. I am dealing with that right now with Vs. I know what I need to do, I just can't line up every aspect of my gameplay to do it. There seems to be a buzz around Vs. SMB right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see 5 person battle for the top spot in 2012.

Yeah I have noticed that there is a buzz around Vs. ATM as well, Hopefully there will be some competition on Vs. as that will only help increase the scores for the game. I am still working on getting all of the bonus turtle 1-up's in the game (they are really annoying to get- especially 8-1). I still haven't been able to beat my 2.2mill game but I think if the competition is raised I will hopefully be able to get over the 2.5 mill mark and close in on 3 mill.
Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
I hope to post 3.mil + game here in the next few weeks. I have worked out all the steps to get over Triforces 3.4mil as well. It takes a lot of skill and a bit of luck, but it can be done. I am sure Andrew and Triforce will be be nipping at my heals if I do manage to pull it off.

Sometimes when it comes to having to point press to get close to a WR score then I don't enjoy it and maybe stop trying for the World Record. That why I think some WR variations are kinda whack. Like Donkey Kong!!!!! The object is to get to the end of the level, not wait and jump barrels!!!!!!!
Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
 i think that depends, if you play stuff like Tetris there's almost no way you could feel bored 'cause these type of game has so much fun inside and i always got the feeling that i play against the game and myself.

Hey Michael, how goes the Puzzle Bobble work?
Re: Do you find games stop being fun once you are going for
I know exactly where this thread is coming from. This type of "not fun" is why I will never get the world record on Donkey Kong, and possibly not even a million points.
Every title is different, and in Donkey Kong's case, there's really not much in the way of truly mindless, dead-boring stretches of point pressing (except for the hitbox leeching on the springs and Kong's foot during the early levels). Pressing the game almost always involves risk and skill, which is fun, and challenging
However, the problem with Donkey Kong is that once you're aiming anywhere past a million-point pace or so, it becomes less about how many points you're pulling out of the game and more about how many points the game has decided to give you.
This isn't as true of the barrels or elevators screens, which can be "controlled" more fully, but it is very true of conveyors and rivets.
If you're going for the world record but you run into a bad string of conveyors/rivets, where they're relentlessly chasing you around and pinning you into corners, the challenge of it might be interesting (and you might feel like a hotshot by surviving it), but all the while they're going to be chewing up your bonus timers so badly that the game will have to be ditched, through no fault of your own.
At 1.15 (MAME) and 1.09 (arcade), the world records are now in the territory where you're largely dependent on the game blessing you with favorable conditions, as opposed to your own skills. You have to be "dealt" the right game.
Other players might see it differently, but this is how it seems to me at my current stage of development.
And I can't imagine anything more miserable than trying to beat Phil Tudose's horrifying 685K Crazy Kong game! He only submitted that one to MARP, not TG, and his "official" TG world record is actually somewhat soft (I myself would have beaten it the other day if I hadn't stupidly screwed up my cash-in lives on 21-1), but boy, that MARP game... he ate EVERYTHING on the plate with that one, bones, fat trimmings and all.
