Yep, the common dilemma of competitive gaming, dying because you misjudged how long grocery shopping would take.
Hands down my favorite MARP comment.

Well, I gotta have milk in my coffee!

I've often thought of calculating the optimal starting level to maximize your chance of an arcade marathon. Not that I have access to either Gauntlet or Gauntlet II cabinets any more :(

I have played the original Gauntlet a lot since it came out and I can't believe that score. I mean, level 8 and above get very difficult. Is there some trick involved? What's the story here? What character did they use?

RTM REPLY - I personally verified the 4.4M by Charles Nagle back when I was operating as chief referee for Twin Galaxies. Seems like that has been beaten by Dwayne Richard since then, another very accomplished and widely recognized classic arcade gamer.

For players that know what they are doing, and I am sure that Dwayne did as well, accumulating a massive health reserve is entirely possible. I can't remember what character Charles used, nor if I even mentioned that in an accompanying article as some aspects of world records were kept secret at the request of the submitter back in those days. I have no idea what Dwayne used, or if each of the playable characters is possible to use for marathon gameplay on this title.

ive worked out the maze sequence and it follows a pattern based on its default order there are several sequencing patterns it uses once all mazes have been played. It's never changes the sequence from game to game so it's possible to work out what maze will be next till it resets back to its default sequence.

There are 10 million point MAME replays using all four different characters at MARP on the "marathonable" plentiful food romsets. So on those non-starvation romsets, each of the playable characters is possible to use for marathon gameplay.

This is the arcade version. Played this game around October 1986 for 36 hours, scored 25,100,000. The picture above should say just before 20 million. After level 999 the game returns to level 8. I made it to level 1,260.
