    Atari Joystick Modification

    Over the last several weeks, I've been playing Decathlon (Atari 2600) with a "modified" Atari joystick. The modification involves moving a few connection within the joystick.

    Before the mod... the character runs by moving the joystick left & right.

    After the mod... the character runs by rotating the joystick.

    This change does not physically assist me in anyway as I'm still doing all the work... I'm just moving the joystick in a different direction.

    Before submitting my scores, I would like to hear from the community if this modification is acceptable.

    Thanks,

    Greg Degeneffe (GregDeg)

    Hi Greg. Can you explain the reason behind modifying the joystick in this manner? We had some controversy recently with a Track and Field submission where the player was using a steering wheel as an input device.
    Oh yeah, I went there!

    Here's how the modification works...

    The joystick has 5 inputs (fire, left, up, right, down)

    My idea is to modify the inputs like this...

    Fire = Fire
    Left = Left
    Up = Right
    Right = Left
    Down = Right

    When you rotate the joystick, inputs will alternate left, right, left, right with each rotation.

    Decathlon does not use up or down so this mod works throughout the game.

    The idea, of course, is to make the runner move faster. Physically, I'm putting in the same effort as I would without the mod so there is no external advantage. I'm still doing all the work!

    Your Thoughts...

    Must be an internal advantage then Greg? You're doing the "same" work, but the runner is moving faster?

    Why not just input like everyone else has / did. I smell contradiction!

    If I competed on this platform now, I would call BS!

    I think it's an advantage. Considering you are competing on an original platform. However, how do we ever know what controller is used unless they are honest? Greg is getting penalized for being honest. He didn't have to say anything. I don't think he gains an advantage from what is described, but it's different to maybe other participants. In fact, most likely, does it help? Maybe, Maybe not.

    The comparison is the MAME Track N Field thread, that's a no or it was right? But the funny thing is, Greg didn't have to say anything. And I know from watching his Atari submissions he's a straight up player. But what does it mean to the community?

    Not alot of people show a controller. It's only when someone says something for the most part. So now in this certain case, does it aid in play? but how do we ever know?

    I'll give Greg credit for being honest. No question there.

    He's not being "penalized" though. He did ASK for "thoughts" !

    I just like to see honest same for same competition.

    I have tipped my hat to Greg with what he has achieved in the past. Stay honest, even if it is not an advantage!!!!

    Since showing your hands isn't a requirement, hats off to you for your honesty, Greg. I think if someone wanted to do this on a game like Space Invaders (Why, I don't know...But it uses left, right and fire!) , go for it. For Decathlon, and similar games, where the game is all about how fast you can hit those directions, this seems like an advantage to me. Though you're doing the work, it's one fluid motion, which I think is easier than moving left and right. The way the game is, is how the programmers intended. To switch it up, breaks the spirit of the game as well.

    The tagging system seemed to not be working yesterday, but.. I'm curious what @marcamy thinks.

    The programmers were restricted by the hardware / joystick. So, yeah, the game was intended to be played as per those restrictions. Not by "mods" !
