I'm pretty sure there are rules against mapping a button/direction to multiple buttons on MAME. I doubt there are rules for this situation on the console but I would have to say it doesn't seem right.

I agree that the game designers intended use was the original Atari joystick only because this was the most common controller at the time. However, there were other controllers for the 2600. One example is the Atari Trak-Ball (cx-22 & cx-80). I’m not familiar on its use with the game Decathlon (spinning or rotating), but my understanding is it was an “approved” controller for this game. From what I understand, this was the controller used to produce the top scores. As you can see those scores far exceed what is possible using the “intended” joystick.

I never see anyone show their hands on console games. There's only discussion when someone is honest or is broken down enough where they admit it. Greg Deg I know isn't cutting corners, but I don't know about accepting this modified controller. But at the same time he could have not said anything and there'd be know discussion. Simple as that.

Not that he's trying to get away with anything, but how would you know if he wasn't honest with you?

I Do think that modifying the joy submitting for original hardware is taboo. But I just don't know how we prove all this.

I can say this, provide video on how this all works and we as a community may have more clarity to judge it.

So far it looks like the community is not in favor of the mod or at best undecided. The only video I can show you is the mod in action. With a few weeks of practice, this is what’s possible (see video). It looks like I’ll be purchasing a Trak-Ball in the near future. I appreciate all the comments. I’ve always felt someone’s honesty and integrity is far more important than a high score. Thanks again.

I'm not sure if it was approved, or not, but I wouldn't doubt it.. It's not like an arcade track ball. It only moves as fast as a joystick would move because it's emulating the joystick. It doesn't seem like an advantage to me. Your modded joystick is probably better.

but at the same time if not trying to gain advantage why use it in the first place?
