RulesThe timespan of the "perfect" stage 1 clearance is measured in frames. It starts at the frame in which the “READY!” disappears, and ends at the frame in which the player scores 14,800 points.

Before the “READY!” disappears, the player's score must be zero (displayed as “00”). Any other score shall result in the rejection of the player's submission.

The frame numbers used to calculate the timespan shall be those assigned by the specific version of Wolf MAME used by the player, therefore Wolf MAME's input file (extension, INP) shall be the sole evidence of said timespan.

All frames must be counted, so the timespan is an inclusive total. Thus:-

    Timespan = ending frame's number - starting frame's number + 1

Errors yielding a longer timespan (more frames counted than necessary) shall be tolerated. Errors yielding a shorter timespan (uncounted frames) shall result in the rejection of the player's submission.

    question:
won't running the fastest cherry pattern net you the top score?

I don't see much of a challenge in learning the cherry pattern. A day tops. This track will end out being nothing but perfect scores.

Just wondering what the motivation behind it is? Maybe I'm missing the point?

Not necessarily. I believe you're referring to the pattern I use, and it's the fastest one yet devised, as far as I know. But only if you execute it to perfection. It involves three 180⁰ turns, while eating dots, which is the most difficult turn in the game to execute perfectly. Perfect execution is making the turn on the frame in which you eat the dot. Most players would overrun by a frame or two, so they would not complete the stage in the optimal time of 4,050 frames.

Not much challenge in learning it, I agree. Bit more of a challenge to master it, I think.

Hopefully not. In an ideal world, all levels of player, from dilettante to master, would make submissions. There'd be a variety of completion times, and perhaps also a variety of patterns used.

The pattern we know to be the quickest has been around for several years. Could be that a little competition on this track may motivate someone to come up with an even quicker one. One never knows.

So is this the last frame READY! can be seen or the first frame after it has disappeared?

    Are you on my radar?
I'd rather be last on every game than throw my time away chasing only one score.

"Disappears" is the operative word. Here is an example of a starting frame:-

And here is the frame which proves that it is the correct starting frame:-

Thanks - best to get the clarity in now before there's a debate. ;)

Anyone wishing to submit something to this track will be delighted to hear that I've tweaked what was formerly the fastest known stage 1 pattern. By adding a couple more 180° turns to it, I've reduced its potential timespan by up to 24 frames. So, the best possible result for this track will be 4,026. I've already got a 4,029 frame clearance on INP, and hopefully will have the "perfect" submission ready, by the time enough people decide that this track deserves to exist.

You can pony up the SPs yourself if you believe it in enough. ;)

I shall do so, as much as necessary, once I've done threads for all the 21 stages

Cool. With a track that isn't this straight forward, my personal approach would have been to test one set of rules with a submission and then when they're confirmed as working, then expand to more. Food for thought, only. ;)
