The article you posted said the gamer was 19 years old, but this Brian King started high school in 1989, which would have made him under 10 years old in 1983 when the record was set...I think we're looking for someone else.
Sorry, I didn't save the newspaper article that made me think that was him. Maybe it mentioned him working for a trophy company or something.

Guess that will make life here easier.

One more thing I did run across: This is the earliest reference from TG that I've ever seen referring to the score as ending in 680. From Video Games Magazine, December, 1983:

Early references to TG high scores are meaningless. This is the era I like to call the Napkin Submission era. It's a pure word of mouth era. Write your score on a napkin from the snack bar, get a witness signature, and Walter trusted it.

This score is mathematically impossible. Period. Quit with the crap. Erase this.

    Well put

I like to think everyone got a free piece of chalk every time you walked into the arcade so you could write your own scores up.

Also I implore David Gomez to chime in. He's the modern king of Robotron and has proven his skill on two separate occasions within the past year or so (that I've seen). Killer 100M marathons. If we need expert opinion, he's your man.

80 + hour marathons are not out of the question. I think top players can get to 100,000,000 points in Robotron in 24 hours.

I don't question the possibility of the 348 million point game, but the 80 points at the end is clearly wrong.

    Remove the score.

In the quest to leave no stone unturned, I am interested in ‘quirks’ whereby erroneous-looking digits appear in a score. Another dispute discusses how Capcom games usually/sometimes add a 1 for each continue, for example. Considering we already know that Robotron: 2084 exhibits odd behaviour at 100 million points, does anyone have any other examples of games where the final score can be at odds with how the game normally adds it up?

Thanks for the discussion, on this and other disputes. The information presented so far is exactly what we have been hoping for.

Running a compare of a 1982 Williams game to something like Final Fight probably won't get us very far. I would suggest running a compare of how score is handled with other Williams games of the period that run on the same or similar hardware. Joust, Defender, Stargate, etc.

He can read everything here, he has created an account and is willing to answer questions. He's not able to leave a comment. Can an admin look into why @TarheelKing cant comment?
