Giving the ESI its proper name

I have observed several discussions about the Expert Skill Index, but none of them addressed what, to me, is the most obvious problem with it: it is misnamed.

It ought to be called the Competitive Participation Index, because it indexes levels of participation, as defined by the quantity of eligible records. It does not index levels of skill, which would be connected to the quality of records.

What I'm saying is that it's time for Twin Galaxies to acknowledge that this particular index is about quantity, not quality. If TG wishes to have a proper index of skill levels, I can provide suggestions.

I too have thought the use of the word 'skill' is misused to describe this metric. The properly named metric should reflect what is actually being measured. For example, baseball is a game rip with statistical measurements. An RBI (Runs Batted In) measures how many runs a batter bats in for his/her team, a BA (batting average) is the ratio of successful at bats to total at bats.

Coincidentally, I've mulled over what thing does "ESI" really measure. The calculation is driven by competition and participation, as AD stated. Competitive Participation Index (CPI) is aptly named.

I brought this up back is SOTG days. Its semantics, but yes people are sensitive about words. "skill" is definitely going to offend people. jace acknowledged that but also insisted "skill" must be used so that outsiders will look at the number and recognize its used to compare people. Remember, the idea was ESI would somehow appeal to sponsors and calling it a "skill index" makes the sponsors more likely to sponsor someone than "twin galazy points" or any other name. I personally dont think ESI is ever landing any sponsors and such an idea only feeds into the delucions some have about making itbig on classic video games. whatever though, we all know what it really means at this point, it only confuses outsiders, and apparently, thats the point.

I’d like to see the ratios of ESI vs # of records displayed somewhere. It would give a true indication of who has quality records vs just a large quantity of marginal scores.

Of course this “quality” is defined by a lot of people submitting, so it’s not perfect.

I don't know why people hate the word skill in it. You beat someone to get points. That takes skill. The only problem I have with it is there should be points for last place or inaugural scores to promote more participation.

That would be because it does nothing to measure skill levels.

Not if the person you beat displayed no skill.

@swaggers it used to give points for being last. There was a complain someone could just spam a bunch of meaningless scores. Honeslty though it would take a hell of a lot of one points to ruin the system and i think the fear was misplaced. especailly when the main issue with ESI is the lack of participation makes it difficult to compare tracks. The benefit of increased participation would result in a far more accurate ESI, that increased accuracy i think would overcome the slight decrease in accuracy due to a few 1 points being handed out here and there. I would also favor a return of some small point value for last place
