Looking for the perfect Eeveelution to fit your Pokemon Go squad? This handy guide will let you transform any Eevee you catch into the evolution you want.

Eevee has always been one of the most intriguing creatures in the Pokemon universe. Its ability to evolve into one of a number of powerful forms makes it a versatile addition to the Pokemon Go squad, but catching one of these furry little guys raises a simple question: how do we get the Eeveelution we need for our team or Pokedex? While in the core Pokemon games the answer is as simple as “elemental stone of our choice,” in Pokemon Go things aren’t so clear cut.

First and foremost, evolving an Eevee without doing any of these initial steps, just gathering enough candies and tapping “Evolve,” leaves the Eeveelution process completely up to chance. The game will randomly choose one of Eevee’s evolved forms, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, and Umbreon, and that’s the one you get, goodbye, see you later. However, there are a few things that can be done to influence the game a bit and get the Eeveelution you want.

One of the many ways to use names for Eeveelutions...

First is the renaming method, where you can change a caught Eevee’s name in order to make it evolve into the form of your choice. Those names and which forms they produce are as follows:

- Naming Eevee “Rainer” will produce a Vaporeon

- Naming Eevee “Sparky” will produce a Jolteon

- Naming Eevee “Pyro” will produce a Flareon

- Naming Eevee “Sakura” will produce an Espeon

- Naming Eevee “Tamao” will produce an Umbreon

Please note that this naming trick only works once for each form. If you’ve previously evolved an Eevee into a Jolteon using the name “Sparky,” it will not work again. This is a one-and-done method, one Eeveelution per name, so make sure it’s spelled right.

After the names you must leave the Eeveelution process to chance, however there’s one more interesting caveat that tips the scales toward Espeon and Umbreon specifically. In the Game Boy game where these two debuted, we have to increase Eevee’s happiness level to full, then evolve it during the day (Espeon) or at night (Umbreon) in order to be selective. According to this Reddit post, the same idea applies.

Assigning an Eevee as your PokeBuddy, walking with it for 10km, then evolving it during the day will land an Espeon, while doing the same but evolving the Eevee at night produces an Umbreon. There are no known walking methods that will produce the other three Eeveelutions, this trick only works for the two newer forms in the game.

With this handy little guide you’ll be able to tip the Eeveelution scales in your favor, allowing you to get the exact Pokemon you’re looking for. With these in hand your Battle Party will be ready to take on any Raids that come up...or your Pokemon list will be endless creatures with names ending in -eon. Either way, go out there and get catching, Trainer.
