Google finally (implicitly) admits to having saved all your audio previously

I got an e-mail from Google. Much like the Timeline feature which tracks your every move on GPS, the recording of audio is now optional. When you finally get to the option that you knew nothing about you'll find out it's been recording all along. Not that this behaviour was any kind of secret (there's enough YouTube content highlighting the proof) but the Google marketing machine wishes people to know they've returned another one of the individual's privacy rights back to them (so long as, by default, they get to keep all the previous data).

This is how most organizations work:

"We will do X until somebody complains. Then we will remove the data from our online production environment. Backups? Those are kept for 7 years. Yeah, no, we are not going to purge data from backups, that would be dumb. Oh hello research department. Sure, you can have our backups. Go nuts."
