PS5 & Xbox Series X... so what?

Skimming through my inbox this morning, caught a piece of spam referencing PS5 and something dawned on me: the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been around for what feels like a long time now (6+ months commercially but lots more than a year of hype)... and their impact on society hasn't been noticed by me yet. Normally, there's a bunch of people referencing new technologies (including new consoles) and this hasn't changed but simply PS5 & Xbox series X don't seem to be included in those conversations. No exclusive games to speak of being referenced regularly (Cyberpunk was just news worthy for being less than the hype).

The hype died, feels like the consoles already have too.

It's because of the shortage of supply of units. No one can get them (especially due to scalpers also buying them all up) so there is no audience and also not many new games coming out.

PS4 is still the main console and Xbox One is for Microsoft. These consoles like you say may have gone past the point of where anyone cares. it's a pretty unique situation and could be a big problem.

In my opinion... i lost interest after the PS2. The graphics got slightly better but the games were no where near as good as the older ones. They all use Unreal Engine nowadays, look the same, it's all endless Call Of Duty games and endless remasters (I'm looking at you, Skyrim).

The vast difference between games is getting smaller and they all feel the same. The graphics isn't getting that much better anymore. PS3 vs PS5 yes there is improvement but is there really such a leap as PS1 to PS2? and thats 2 generations leap vs 3...

On the flip side... i could just be getting old haha!

My son (18) was talking to his freinds. "Yeah, I want a switch. I'll just wait until the price comes way down".

Smart kid. To me, the WiiU is still new. The last new console I bought was a Game Cube. I didn't have kids yet and I was so excited to get "grown up games" like Eternal Darkness.

Now I am like "yeah, whatever". I have more fun playing cookie clicker. Got a 5 year run going on an old PC and I just bought it on Steam to play on my SuperBeast(tm).

PinballFX3 is my main real game these days. Steam for the win.

When people can't buy them, then no one will care. Supply chain is killing the upgrade cycle to the new systems

If the world situation gets any worse, China might just take over Taiwan. Then we will have chip shortages the likes of which God has never seen (Dune reference).

As mentioned, the shortage first and foremost. Only the most diehard are adding to carts and getting them or the luckiest so some have abstained from buying right now because after all it's still an XBOX ONE. It's not like the hype surround the Xbox One on the heals of the 3rod xbox 360! So can't compare the hype at all. Only the geekiest tech gamers who want that 4k and extra power, bells and whistles did cartwheels. Most people still can't purchase.

Also, Microsoft with the game pass and forcing the integration with windows 11 opens up whole new compatibility of cross platform. They don't want you to have to worry about what your gaming with. Just that you have that game pass paid monthly. So less stress on the actual "console" and more stress on content and platform availability. Gone are the days of having to pay for a game from a Microsoft developer or partner for both the pc and xbox if you wanted to play on both.

I agree with Andrew, to me, consoles are pretty much dead. I have the PS4 with aprox 30 games and it's been at least 8 months since I played it. I own every single Sony console including the handhelds but don't care at all about the PS5, wouldn't even buy it at half price. The design is awful, looks like a Nike shoe, the games are very expensive and unatractive and I have lots and lots of games in my PC and older consoles that I haven't played yet.

The Nintendo Switch is still selling super well but not because of its graphics, it is because of its compact desing and the array of classic franchises like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.

I don't think consoles will completely die, but their pirme is well passed and PC and mobiles will continue to dominate the market.

    I have to agree.
As time progresses, interest wanes. Never thought I'd see it in the gaming world. I suppose newer platforms don't help the cause. Soon, you can play games in your eyelids, online through a bluetooth-butt implant dongle, and share it to anyone with the bum glasses via Windows app.
    I bought a PS3 from Ebay for just £65, with 15 games.
Played GTA and GT thoroughly. Tried the others, never played since. Bought myself Driver 3 or whatsitcalled, don't like it.
Horrible. I know I'm limiting myself anyway, but I thought new games on a new console would grab me.
Consoles are the new age "home arcade". It will die, too, and a new breed of arcade restorer types will get famous.
It's sad, but it's the way of the VHS. Here today, gone soon. It was a great generation.

Know where I might be able to get one of those bluetooth-butt implant dongles? Asking for a friend =D

The younger generation, and every kid for Christmas will get either console. None are going anywhere anytime soon ;)

Nintendo has crushed them all. Side note, Nintendo was disappointed in their sales last quarter because they didn't meet there projected mark...well god damn Nintendo, everybody already bought a Switch during covid, how many more did you think you would sell. Greedy bastards. Start releasing some bad ass games now and your sales will go up again.

I have a prototype. I need buttfunding. Crowd butt funding. Awaiting bum glasses configs.
Subjects are sampling the rough prototypes. Responses are very positive. Some are volunteering again. Some are offering cash.
I may need to destroy this...
