Tetris Is Timeless

Hey everyone.


I've found myself playing lots and lots of Tetris lately whenever I'm not playing games for tourneys. It's all I've been playing otherwise actually. I was making runs on GB and got to Tetris and then just kept getting at Tetris. I got it bad. Like, I take my GB with me in the truck and when I get to work early I sit in the truck and play until it's time to start my day. It feels good.


Hopefully I'll have some footage of some personal bests worth submitting. I did crack 120k on the NES version last weekend, but I can do better, so hopefully I'll have a 200k submission coming in the next few weeks. Game on.

    Tetris is definitely a timeless classic. I used to rent the Tengen one for my NES back in the 80's. 3 bucks for a weekend or something like that. I loved the cartridge, loved the game. I played it so much in college (there was some sort of arcade version) that I used to see people tetris blocks while walking through crowds down the hallways.

    I disliked Tetris for a long time. Seemed like a simple puzzle that I just couldn't crack. That was, until it was on my phone (way back when a Nokia N95 was better than the fledgling Android phones) in my pocket constantly. Very easy to get better at it when its immediately available for every passing moment. :) Once I'd switched to Android, I lost touch with Tetris due to the lack of buttons - I couldn't adapt to the touchscreen interface.

    I always find Tetris fun, even if I'm not a pro at it. Here is my Tetris collection as of about 5 years ago. Since then I have of course added some additional ones, while getting rid of others.

    I wholeheartedly agree with this. Tetris is such an addicting and pleasing passtime, always coming back for more, determined to make a personal best.

    Thought it'd be fun to make as many Tetris records as possible as well with various platforms, that's just how much I love Tetris!

    Hey while the Tetris-ers are here - can someone explain the difference between the Nintendo version and the Tengen version for NES? I ask because I have an NES Everdrive and there's only the one ROM for Tetris (USA) or whatever. How do I know which is which?

    Tengen has two players, the difficulty ramps up slower, there is no "b-type" game, better color scheme. I prefer that version over Nintendo's

    Very good thank you. It seems that you can tell the Tengen ROM apart from the Nintendo ROM just by observing the menu screen. That's a good thing for me since I'm using an Everdrive to play it.

    And yes the color schemes leave something to be desired. I started playing Level 9 just because the colors were the most distinct and visible. I'm still not 100% there with my reflexes but it's way easier to see what's going on (I'm not getting any younger I suppose).

    From what I recall, Tengen was an unlicenced game developer. At the time, Nintendo wanted developers to fork over serious cash for the right to program games. This was supposed to ensure game integrity, but if you ever played Street Fight you will know that not ever game that had this seal was any good. It was just a money grab.

    The Tengen carts were gold, and I recall the game having Russian artifacts in it.

    I do have a Tengen version of Gauntlet - is that the only Gauntlet on NES or is there a Nintendo version too? Anyway I haven't gotten it working yet and my buddy in college gave it to me because he couldn't get it to work either. But I'll get it someday.


    EDIT: Gauntlet is one of the four licensed ones that have both Nintendo and Tengen carts. There are sixteen more Tengen carts that don't have Nintendo counterparts. https://nescollector.zamaman.com/?p=20 I'm gonna have to look into getting more of these.
