TWIN GALAXIES

Over the span of 30+ years, many passionate video game players have submitted amazing performances to Twin Galaxies with a desire for recognition and acknowledgement.

The vast majority of the performances that were sent to Twin Galaxies were recorded on VHS video tape (or DVD), and TG referees would review those recordings as part of the old process of adjudication. Once they were reviewed, the tapes were placed in boxes and archived away, never to be seen again!

Since VHS tapes will not last forever, Twin Galaxies has decided to open those archive boxes and digitize as many tapes as it can for long term preservation.

Some of the tapes may be for performances that are already listed in the Twin Galaxies database, and some of the tapes may be of score performances that referees from the past were never able to find enough time to adjudicate.

This Wiki page is where Twin Galaxies will provide links to a copy of each tape that is digitized and preserved.

There are hundreds of tapes to process, so this list shall continue to grow over time.

If old performances that were not adjudicated at the time of submission during an old Twin Galaxies era are found, they will not automatically be placed into the Twin Galaxies database. Instead, the individual who originally submitted that performance can re-submit it under the new and current TGSAP adjudication system.

Please keep your eye on that page if you are interested in seeing the latest additions to the archive!

When the people sent the videos in, they were doing so wanting to add their score to the database. Through no fault of their own some of the videos never made it through the process. As those are unearthed shouldn't they be automatically run through the process as it stands now? Some will be accepted, and others rejected. Those who submitted may never come to this site, or even be alive anymore to do it themselves. Yet, their original intention was to have them as part of the database. It would be neat to honor that intention. I can't imagine it would be a ton all at once so there shouldn't be any risk of overwhelming us.

I have mixed feelings on this. Yes, those submitters were wanting their scores verified and added to the database. They were also, however, wanting their scores verified by the standards in place at the time of their submission. It might not be fair to try to apply our current standards to those types of submissions.

I know things are different now, but they shouldn't be that much different. What is different now? Showing the system is all I can think of. We could put an asterisks next to these submissions if the system isn't shown or we could go by today's standards and require it. Worst case scenario they are rejected, which really isn't much worse than the fate they already had of being lost in time.

Another thought is who and how would submit them? Having a flood of submissions being loaded to the queue for "free" might further jack up the already whack SP economy. Also if TG is loading the submissions, it could be interpreted as TG showing a bias or influence in having a score verified or not - something TG management rightfully does not wish to be a part of.

Like I said, mixed feelings. It would be great to have "new" old scores added if valid. But it could be a slippery slope. Just having the scores available to being viewed is already such a huge project and win for the community.

We could offer a pool for SP donations. I for one am earning it faster than I can use it. If someone asked me today I would be able to donate 400 SP without blinking an eye to get it started. I'll earn more, and it does no good just sitting in my 'account'. It appears that many others are like me. Some with thousands of points they will never use built up.

TG would have to set up a name for each so all they would be doing is data entry. No bias on their end.

I can't imagine there will be that many. I assume most made it through the process. Especially on the big name games.

This could also be a round 2 for after everything is uploaded and we know what is really there. A system like the dispute system could be put in place to allow people to suggest records be brought from the holding pin into the actual record books.

Of course, these are all just ideas and thoughts. I don't have a horse in the race. I am just thinking out loud. I am happy no matter what.

its possible our feelings on whats appropriate will change when we see what we're even talking about.

Almost all console submissions were done by VCR recordings only. It was never required that we show the consoles. I was a rare exception that I had to do a dual recording showing my hands as well as have the direct VCR recording, since the refs didn't believe any of my NES Track and Field scores without it. They knew my scores would be disputed and they were. But they had enough in my submissions to not make me resubmit to clear the dispute. Back then if there was a dispute the player would have X amount of time to submit another score in the realm of the disputed score. Maybe 80%? Can't remember since I never had to resubmit.

It was a very different time in the early 2000s.

although thats before my time i have read alotof the old old forums, the exact percentage changed at differing years. it was lower, maybe you're right about 80% at first. then at one point it was 95% and finally settled on 100% which is no different really than just rejected and a new submission
