A very long writeup

https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/e78ljg/why_the_rodrigo_lopes_dispute_might_have_been_the/

This just came across my desk. @ersatz_cats has made a very long post over at reddit about the Rodrigo Lopes dispute. He doesn't pull any punches and seems to enjoy calling Twin Galaxies various names. Not biased at all folks. And certainly not any sort of fan of the undead Cat Despira, who likely whispers sweet nothings into the phone at night "spilling all the secrets".

Whatever floats your boat.

I agree with ersatz when he talks about people claiming validity of the dispute having to risk lifetime bans and having their records removed? That's bs. Where did that come from? lol

Some of the speedrunners on that thread are just full of sh*t. They know nothing about what the modern TG is. Oh, and I've heard the "you can just post all your scores to speedruncom", no you can't. They only really measure speedrunning, not scores.

The hypocrisy of some of the speedrunners is just mind baffling. All they talk about is how TG is crap, how people using it are crap; crap crap crap. Personally I'm a bit tired of the a** licking to get these guys to join here; they ain't no better than anyone here.

IKR?! The sheer number of cheaters on their sites that have been caught is baffling and is an ongoing process but all our cheaters are from pre TGSAP period, but these douche lords are turning up their noses at TG? How many tgsap scores are cheated as compared to the banned scores on their "modern" sites? Is the adjudication standards of r/speedruns and speedrun.com better than tgsap? I'd like ersatz to answer me that.

Whatever is said on Reddit we shouldn't forget that speedrunners came here to offer critical participation in the Zelda dispute. It goes without saying that deconstructing the mythology around TG will not only take time but will be dependent on individual curiosity - those who are interested in seeing "what's up" about TG despite the stories of years past. I guess what I'm saying is that if we believe that TG is heading in the right direction and that we want to welcome fellow gamers no matter their background then let's foster positivity when we encounter Reddit threads stewing in negativity. My personal opinion/fear is that if we fight fire with fire, we're just going to lend a hand in perpetuating the negativity against TG. There are scores of gamers who will forever slam TG so this isn't about appeasement but recognizing that for all the negativity there are curious gamers who *are* interested in bucking "conventional wisdom" and giving TG a try so our community focus should remain on these new users not those who are content to peddle in TG stereotypes.

Okay I just skimmed the article and read the comments (yeah I know should have done that first)

My own revised take is that people can and should be critical of TG especially if they want to see the site improve. People should also be welcome to their opinions and I didn't find the comments inflammatory so I would normally edit my original post to reflect that it wasn't threads of comments bashing TG but I'll leave it "as is" and add this update. While I definitely disagree with portions of ersatz post, I always want to hear constructive criticism as a TG member.

Yes i should commend the few speedrunners who actually showed up in the rodrigo dispute and didn't give way to total ignorance so they can have some input. Their contributions were very helpful. You can knock jace for appealing to the speedrun community the way he did but the speedrunners who participated in the dispute truly helped. One of these guys even submitted one of their scores on our zelda leaderboard so that was really cool. I have no problems really with the speedrun community i know there are legit runners on these sites and they have their cheaters and the same can be said for TG but TG gets hate but these other places are considered beyond reproach? That's idiotic. And why is it called the "speedrun community" as if it's something separate from TG? TG has speedrunners and speedruns too you know? My mame record for soul edge is technically a speedrun as the high score is measured in time, not points. So i'm not part of the "speedrun community"? wtf?

i do think just as some speedrunners make the mistake of lumping old and new tg together, some tg members make the mistake of lumping all speedrunners together.

we dont owe "The speedrun community" anything for the contributors that came here, we owe the contributors. We dont need to reach out to "the community" we need to reach out to any reasonable person who has valid gripes but would be willing to come here if we resolved them.

on a simliar note i got sooo frustrated when people who hate cheating, inadvertently stand up for the cheaters. and i do feel ersatz, while i believe meaning well, inadvertadently did that. thnk about it, alot of the high profile disputes, before the dispute system were largely forgotten. Then, when jace removed billy, todd, and now rodrigo obvioulsy i expected their fans to say it means tg lost all credibilty but shockingly it resulted in the haters saying tg lost all cred too. apparently, removing fake scores, since it involves drawing attention to those scores, and admitted we USED to have them, somehow means tg is unreliable. but really, think of that. admitting to fake scores and removing gets more critcisim than ignoring them? that attitude very much is equivlalent to bashing tg for doing the right thing and yes, even though i understand the motive is to bash the fake scores its inadvertadently sticking up for the cheaters and effectively bashing the score removal

now thats not to say the process is above reproach. by all means criticze the process so that it can improve. i just wish though, that mixed in with the criticisms, there wouldnt be the implication, or even worse the sometimes expliclty statement that TG is completely unreliable as a result of removing bad scores. This is why organizations cover up outright crimes, or in tg's case, cheating. If admitting to a problem and fixing it gets more criticism than covering up a problem, then think of the behavior that encourages.

oh, and i should be clear i was trying to hard to not come off as to critical of ersatz while at the same time expressing my disagreement. lets not forget he found the mtv interview with bob, and that interview which too many of us just told us what we already knew shockingly had an effect on some. that interview's existence is what changed david race's mind and made him realize billy was wasting his time. to me, i dont see how anyone could believe the tapes were ever tampererd with to begin with and i thought anyone pushing that angle was beyond hope of reaching, i guess it just goes to show how bad i am at psychology though, because shockingly some of the people i thought were unreachable were in fact reachable it just took the mtv interview of all things. so definitley grateful to ersatz contributions there for example

TGs reputation amoung them will never change unless TG offers something so overwhelmingly enticing that they are forced to use TGs platform which is not that complicated.

Speedrunners have their own place, I don't feel the need to force them here. It just sucks they are thinking they are better than us because they are the speedrunners. I mean it's great they have devoted their time playing games or certain game so much that they have mastered it. Folks here have done that with different types of games that you really don't speedrun.. we are different but that doesn't me we are trash. The site on the other hand I get it, there are a lot of things that need to be fixed or changed and it doesn't look like the relationship between the members and the admins here will ever be like it used to be. Sometimes I feel like this site is dying and no one really cares about the current community as a whole. I'm sure it has shown a lot with me lately... I used to be bright eyed and full of hope and positivity when I first joined in 2015.

I wasn't a member here before January this year, so I can only imagine what TG was like before, and I can't really identify with those with a residual sour taste in their mouth over how things used to be, but I can say this: if it weren't for TGSAP and the dispute system, I'd have left TG not long after joining ... "left" meaning not visiting the site daily or participating.

I'm a member here, and at SRC, and SDA, and HSC, and AtariAge, and quite a few others that are obscure, so I'm a part of each "community" and I love each one. For what it's worth, (which I admit could be next to nothing) I spend more than 90% of my gaming-related time here rather than the other sites ... and I doubt that I am an outlier within the universe of people who have membership in all places ... and there is a reason for that.

it appears as though the enivornment in the gaming world is much like the retail and professional services world, in that the complainers are always the loudest, notwithstanding the fact that they represent less than 1% of their respective bodies. It is what it is, I suppose.

i agree with garetts comments about the loudest being most noticed. and i'll again reiterate the "community" isnt truly a group. imagine talking about "the texas community" how fair it would be to lump in some with others. especially the "denton community".

i know the really good intellivision speed runners are positive to tg. they think some things are silly, and frankly i agree with them, but they're respectful and understandable in their disagreement.

in fact when i start a new intellivision for games, first thing i do is go to the intellivision speed run guys to see if they can teach me anything that might overlap.

I made a program for that. It can do animated or the game gear version. I'm hoping to release it soon.
