slow slow slow

dear Twin Galaxies

I visit you more often than Facebook. But more often than not you won't even talk to me. I open you with the app and you timeout before showing me anything.

when I write a post I am terrified of losing all that wonderful information because when I click post it hangs. do I wait? or do I hit post again? do I get backspace what do I do so many questions so many concerns.

@Jace Hall

please have the engineering team look into this issue. what is taking so long for a simple page to show up. or a post. I know from my analysis that each page is about 5 megabytes which when I'm out on a date of plan is an insane amount. I can't imagine all the scripts that are running and all the advertising hooks and lines and daggers and squeakers and squibs and widgets that have to run. I just want to read what my friends are writing.

another problem I have is when I see that I have 50 notifications I read the first one but then all the notifications are gone and I don't know what all the others were. it's like you only get one shot. hitting the button again and then having to select show all notifications also time zone.

I wish I can just crack open the code and look I could make the website incredibly fast and efficient.

thank you for your time

voice to text sometimes has very strange results. I'm too tired right now to edit. I tried to say that when I'm using a data plan 5 megabyte downloads per page is quite a lot.

When making a post please only press the submit button ONCE. Clicking it multiple times runs the risk of multi-posting.

I know the site has been a pain in the butt lately due to the speeds, but it has been brought to the attention of our engineering team multiple times. They are consistently investigating the issues and just when they think that the issue is fixed - it's not.

As for the notification issue. I'll record that on our bug sheet. I've experienced it before, but it was only a one time things for me and I thought it might have been just a hiccup. Is this consistent for you?

All of this said.... I hope for a speedier future as well. U_U

There are numerous things that can go on that cause these issues. So its always a challenge.

Most of the time, the slowness problems are caused by hack / vandalism / ddos / etc. stuff.

We get attacked A LOT. We just don't say anything about it.

Sometimes the attempts are more effective than others, but I give huge credit to @admin staff because when you really think about it TG generally stays up and functional the vast majority of the time despite all this.

Anyway, the engineers are looking into what the problem may be...

MRS Franny! I am not JJTTJ! :)

Thank you for your quick response. It might be the app. Tonight the website from my computer is going pretty good.

RTM REPLY - what I've been experiencing even hitting <enter> just once is that a minute, even up to 3, goes by and I most often still don't see what I typed as posting...but if I completely exit Google Chrome and then re-enter and return to the thread in question, then I see that what I typed had posted.

In other words, the posting is happening but I am still stuck in that same screen where I hit submit to post.

Sometimes, however, it does return me to the thread in question on its own.

Wow, I didn't realize that. I wish there was something I can do to help. Thank you for your reply. I'll keep it in mind before complaining about the speed or double posts.

Some of my clients utilize Cloudflare, and according to them it has eliminated DDoS attacks ... can't say about other intrusions, though.

Twin Galaxies tries to be a Facebook where that platform likely runs on a custom server built in C. The problem is Twin Galaxies is built on PHP which is only built for things like WordPress or forums designed for small web communities.

This community is relatively small so imagine what would happen if it got bigger running on scripts designed to only execute simple tasks. Interpreted scripts like Python, PHP, Ruby are not designed for large infrastructures which Twin Galaxies tries to be.

The vbulletin system we use should be ok for a while...

Here is a vbulletin site with 83 million http://forums.vwvortex.com/

    Also.

    forums.offtopic.com
    forums.somethingawful.com
    forocoches.com/foro/
    pbnation.com/forum.php
    forum.bodybuilding.com
    fanforum.com
    skyscrapercity.com
    forumserver.twoplustwo.com
    neogaf.com/forum
    boxingscene.com/forums

    In common they have:
    Speed. Uncompromising speed.
    Millions of posts.

    All currently highly active.

I'm sure those forums aren't as heavily modified. Also I'd like to imagine the vbulletin this website uses is built from an older version and deviated from that version years ago unless TG is an add-on to the existing script which I doubt but isn't impossible.

Vbullitin isn't scalable and with the features this site implements it isn't exactly feasable to run in scripting languages like php. Vbullitin those sites manage because they likely use cluster servers for their database but the main script itself can't be broken up into servers, not without heavily modifying it.

Also I question how active the forums on those sites are. Personally I'm willing to explore those sites to see how they do it. But ultimately your Facebook and twitters don't operate on scripts, they use a server daemon that handles all the work.

yes there is no question that we will need to continue to improve / change / modify as the site grows.

    Dear Community

we have disabled the mentions on the site . We believe the mentions scripts was the main cause of errors and delayed posts on the site.

Please let us know if you see any improvements . We will continue to investigate and modify the code and get mentions capability working again

    Regards

    Admin Staff

More often than not, when I make a comment on a wall post, the page never completely reloads, even though the browser shows it has finished loading. I'm left with something that looks like this:
