This is a tiny radio transmitter running Meshtastic. Private messenging system, off grid, range of 5 miles. You can use it with an app on a phone, no network access required. Each device passes on mesages they detect, making sure your message gets to the destination.

Great for groups out hiking. Shows where everyone is on a map, all sorts of neat features.

Why share here? Because it involves computers and that is how I roll baby.

that's that something you made or purchased? My wife and I were just talking about needing something like this for when we go hiking, but I didn't know it existed

I purchased, and partly assembled it. Required 4 pins to be soldered.

This is the device I purchased from Amazon Canada, US prices would be lower. I'll be 3D printing cases for it. Takes a special battery (18650), also available on Amazon.

I am just playing around with these for now, seeing how they work out. The software I loaded on the app is very cool. Lets you see the other devices in your group and where they are on a map. Messenging takes a few seconds but considering it is long range and requires NO cell service, that is acceptable.

5 mile range is the claim, have not been able to test so far.

I have 4 devices but terrible soldering skills. I'll let you know if I get the other ones working.
