Quick Research Update

TG Research has been busy. Ben has been posting updates on what he has been up to. Stephen and Glen both joined recently and have hit the ground running. Glen has been talking with community members on various issues but with a heavy focus on MAME.

One area Stephen has been looking into is overall track title formatting. There is too much punctuation in track titles, and this can make it difficult for newcomers. So we will be reforming every track title on the database. Each track name will be edited for clarity, tidiness and consistency.
Everything that would normally be in brackets will now be at the end of a track title, instead of the beginning.

Here are a few test examples:

NTSC - Stadium - Home Run Contest - Donkey Kong
Becomes
Most points scored with Donkey Kong in Home-Run Contest (Stadium mode, NTSC)

PAL - Luigi Raceway - Fastest Lap - NO Shortcuts
Becomes
Fastest lap of Luigi Raceway (no shortcuts, PAL)

NTSC - Arcade Mode - Easy Difficulty - Class A - Super Speedway Circuit [Fastest Race]
Becomes
Fastest race of the Super Speedway Circuit, Arcade mode, Easy difficulty, Class A (NTSC)

Points [Tournament Settings - 5 Lives Only]
Becomes
Most points scored on tournament settings (5 lives)

NTSC - 311 - "Beautiful Disaster" - Bass - Easy - 1 Player [Points]
Becomes
Most points scored on 311 "Beautiful Disaster", Bass, Easy, One Player (NTSC)

The original titles will be saved in the additional info box for each track. This should be visible to members over the next week.

An additional result of this will be a big improvement to how TG certificates look (this is coming very soon). This is a big project and we will handle it in batches. As always we welcome member feedback on everything TG Research is doing - can anyone suggest any possible negative side effects of track title reform? We also very much appreciate the huge amount of help we receive from members in our efforts to fix everything.

Thanks to all for your ongoing patience.

Thank you for your update, Dave.

Has there been any discussion regarding how the phrase "Biggest Blowout" could be reformatted? Say, "Largest Margin of Victory", perhaps?

^ Hope the quote works, can't reply to your post and quote for some reason...

I know the description will still remain giving further clarity, but for me, the original way this is written jumps off the page immediately that I can use only 5 lives. For some games, it may seem to new players like you just need to put the DIPs onto 5 lives.

Other than that, it's will be nice to see a long overdue cleanup to make things standard across the board.

While this clean up is happening, who do we speak to about founding new platforms? The xxx-1 boards is just one that needs to be address as tracks are being created under Arcade which I don't think is right. Best to get this cleaned up now before too many more tracks are created and makes your job even bigger down the track.

Thanks for all the hard work.

Since you are reformatting every title this would be a prime opportunity to put the region into a new column in the track database and get it out of the titles.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. If all the tracks are going to be touched anyways, it's the perfect time to make NTSC/PAL a database field and track it there. Even if, for now, it's just appended to the track name as shown.

    Agree with this 100%.

Definitely a different field for NTSC/PAL regional notation but by moving it to the end you are making it even more difficult to differentiate those seeking the correct track! With NTSC or PAL prefixed, the tracks were alphabetically regional.

As you are touching every track, drop phrases that are worthless: "Most", "Least", "Fastest" "Biggest", etc. Only the #1 spot is the "Most", "Least", "Fastest", "Biggest", etc. It makes no sense to have this in the track title for #2 spot & down. "Race time on " "Points difference on", are descriptive measurements.

I'm going to hate this transition no matter which way it turns out. :(

Oh, and another thing: every TG reference to "NTSC" is actually "60Hz" (includes PAL-M and PAL-60) and every non-Atari 2600 reference to "PAL" is actually "50Hz" (includes SECAM and NTSC-N). Atari 2600 has both PAL (50Hz non-SECAM) and SECAM. There are a few games where the game's region is front & centre - not the broadcast technology: Donkey Konga springs to mind with "NTSC-U" or "NTSC-J".

I didn't see any reformatting for the EMU tracks. I hope those are included and will be marked as such in the database. That could be a great first step into finally separating those scores from the real console scores in the leaderboards.

Hey Marco, I've not got round to any sports games such as Madden and NBA2K as yet, but I'm totally with you on this one - highest margin of victory is definitely what I'd suggest rather than biggest blowout.

Thanks for all the above input folks.

Any suggestions you make regarding track titles are very welcome and will be discussed among the research team. It's good to get an idea of what you think is working in the current format, and what isn't (such as the NTSC vs PAL).

One thing that I am encountering is that there is little uniformity between track titles in different games - some titles have the metrics at the start, others at the end, others not at all. Likewise, the big issue I had is that in the case of track titles where are the many elements (eg. type of game, mode, location, level, number of players), then it becomes very confusing to the average user (and especially to newcomers). Hyrules Warrior Legends and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are prime examples of games suffering from such over-saturation. Obviously we won't lose the elements, simply try to give them some clearer order (if required).

The main goal of the re-titling is to make things instantly clearer for users so they can see exactly what the goal of each track is (eg if it's a high score or fastest time), and also to create some clearer uniformity within the site.

Obviously, things like this will always be subjective to a degree, but I hope for the most part, most users will feel a marked improvement with any tidy-up.

I'd say that is very crucial information what you've raised about the NTSC/PAL issue, so thanks for that.

As I say, please keep all your suggestions and feedback coming! And where I am unsure with titles I will certainly strive to consult the community for feedback.

    Thanks for now :)

I personally agree with this 100%... Nothing is broken in a majority of these track titles, just very few of them in regard to their convoluted rules, not the track title or their lingo themselves.

For years, I keep hearing TG is not Guinness, and Guinness is not TG. Two separate entities, and each do their own things. And its all good and true! This project sound like a "Guinness-like mantra" ways of describing TG tracks. Not to be negative, but its how I perceive it.

A question that's similar, if not exactly on this topic - will there be game renaming? Such as examples where the game name has the platform right in it? For example, "DJ Hero (Xbox 360)" instead of just "DJ Hero". Seems like it would make sense to cover those as you make your way across the database.

That was only ever done because the 2004-2010 version of the web site could not cope with the number of tracks across all platforms (it could cope with one platform easily). A great opportunity to remove these eccentricities. ;)

This is exactly why we ask for feedback before making changes. These are all great points (keep 'em coming). We are not trying to be like anyone else. Some track titles are practically impenetrable and this needs to change to encourage competition. A title needs to contain all the relevant parameters but should also be easy to understand.

Of course. Agreed... "some track titles".
Your post header says "All track titles" will be changed.
That is unnecessary and counterproductive in my opinion.

We were all once "new members" at one time. A title format that "isnt broken" does not need to be format fixed, nor will it increase new competition or membership. Its just some lack of/ or convoluted RULES, that should be the priority to be updated, (without interfering with existing scores/times)... Just sayin'!

The only thought I have on this is from a technical point of view, especially since it seems this could change a lot. Any way you slice it, this is a huge ordeal, then if you decide to change the ordering again equally huge. however, if you went through and gave subfields to track titles, yes, at first that would be a huge ordeal (no huger than currently) but in the future changes could be automated. For example "name", "ntsc/pal", "scoring type" are all fields, if they were internally stored as such then in the future it would only take a few seconds to rearrange and then rearrange back the format.
