I'm going to start using my personal TG Wall for more of my personal stuff relating to gaming. While I do use Facebook too, I'm starting to feel that it will be better and easier for me to find and group my video game related posts if I keep them all in one location like Twin Galaxies! So here it is. :)

Pac Man expert Jon Stoodley was at FreePlay Florida recently and posted a picture of a Kaboom Arcade machine. I'm wondering if this is the only one in existence? If so, I think I may have to get one built! This is super cool...

I can't really see the screen detail from the photo, but it doesn't seem to me that it is using the Atari 2600 version of the game. Can anyone tell me what version that is? 7800?

There were three version of the game… 2600, 5200 and 8-bit family. This is either the 2600 version or a hybrid version. It also looks like a one-of-a-kind cabinet.

The cabinet is a copy of a Centipede cabaret it appears.
The guy down at Freeplay I've seen post other new construction cabs so someone down there must have a CNC machine.

Raspberry Pi runs most of these new hybrid projects because it covers about any emulator you can imagine.

For example, I have a little usb thing called a 2600-daptor II for raspberry pi which lets you run original 7800 or 2600 controllers.

The sky is the limit and people are doing super inspired projects nowadays.
Plus it'll output in any format such as HDMI for new monitors or tvs

Todd Rogers Challenge Edition..haha awesome. Next edition, @GregDeg Edition? :D I wonder what changes were made to make it "Todd" worthy. That plate below the control panel appears to be illuminated. That's a nice touch.

also, you'll notice on the corner of the vinyl sideart that it was done by This Old Game.
They are a top retro arcade restoration resource.
Vinyl is easy for them to print up and it installs like a dream, such as directly on unprimed materials.

I'm gonna guess its better to play in a chair with original paddles, but regardless, this is a piece of art, a fantastic piece of furniture. Would definitely look nice anywhere

If someone can find out who owns this, that would be amazing!

Nice!

I want a score challenge system, but we can't always get what we want.

I played the machine, and I will say it is beautiful. It was so fun I forgot to take photos. A neat feature is the ability to switch between color and black and white. Not sure why you would do that, but it is there.

My only complaint is that there is definitely lag with the control. Maybe around 100ms, but it is definitely noticeable. I have not played the original in years, maybe the lag is there as well.

Beautiful work, beautiful machine.

now the real question. was set on novice or expert?
  • alarm

Is there a way to tell visually? The buttons were start / fire / color / bw.

There were three levels in the water bucket thing, and they seemed normal width. Normal for me, somebody who has not played in a century.

I just picked up one of those later model mini 2600s today. Was $10 bucks used. It also has the color and b/w toggle like the original 2600.
I played kaboom with original paddles and there was zero lag.

What you are describing sounds like a raspberry pi project with the minor lag becoming apparent.

The difference with novice and expert is bucket with. On expert the buckets are SIGNIFICANTLY more narrow. Look at the scoreboard, record for novice is 1,000,000 and people only stopped there cause its a maxout but on expert is only 15,000. yeah, that much harder.

Based on that observation, I would wager that the settings are novice. The bucket looked like a normal width bucket, and not a coffee cup width.

There should be no lag. I am guessing that they are not using a CRT monitor in there...

depending on the lcd monitor there won't be lag. lag on a tv is a setting.

having the multiple versions still leads me to assume it's a raspberry pi.

This was a project of mine we did for our show. Free Play Florida has a focus on competitive gaming and we are lucky to have a number of world class players in attendance. This year, we had a new world record set on Mario Bros Japanese by Steve Kleisath, a new world record on ice cold beer and a kill screen on Donkey Kong. We like to do crazy stuff that helps promote the world of competitive gaming and the gamers themselves and this was one such project. Todd Rogers has always been amazingly kind to us and appeared at all of our events, I consider him a friend and this was my honor for him as it's one of his favorite games too!

For those asking about the guts of it, yes it's a PC running it but it will become a real 2600 in the next couple months. Was done with a pc for the sake of time and making it to the show and yes there's a bit of lag but we simply didn't have time to really do anything about it.

This year we built a lot of crazy stuff like 5 brand new Reactors, the Kaboom mini, a ground up new Nibbler for the Man vs Snake florida premier, and a fully driveable Neo Geo cabinet for Keith Apicary. Was a fun and crazy year :)

The machines you put together were beautiful Brian. I had never heard of reactor, then I saw 5 brand new ones. Incredible.

The mobile Keith Apicary Neo Geo was a riot.

It was great meeting you, hopefully I'll drop down next year too.
