opinion question

So as much as I make fun of the donkey kong guys for spending too much of their lives on just one game, I do kinda like the idea of having an arcade cabinet that never gets old. I'm considering a centipede. Centipede seems normal difficulty but it just keeps getting harder, i'm growingly convinced centipede might be average skill at first, but is the hardest classic arcade game to master. Thinking of getting a cab.

The beauty is the downfall though. Not sure about dedicating years of my life to one game. Its fun, its classic, its cool. My question for others though, is how respected is the record? Does it come with enough bragging right to justify years of practice? cause unlike the other games that i've only needed anywhere from days to months to get the record, i have no doubt this one would take years

I'll think on an actual opinion-believe it or not tho, NOT Burgertime.

I never really put time into learning how to scramble and recover from a mid-level death to get back on track, but it's certainly doable-everyone has a few different things they do, but once you are really good with groupings and know the patterns, I would think the game would kinda get boring to own, other than to show off a little, because you will pretty much be playing the same game, every single time, if that makes sense, a 7.something million point K/S game-you get so many lives, and the game is pretty easy to "good" players(in contrast to games I think are still "hard", for good players).

Nothing to do with why I actually jumped in, it's a "me too", lol!!!

I'm playing Centipede on the 5200 right this moment(before and after "right this moment", actually...), no trackball(which I DON'T think would help me, tbh), and the spider is pissing me off, it's really just too fast-I whine about stuff being "too hard", and I know that's sorta silly on a High Score site, but it detracts from the game.

I'm hoping to do a full-on 5200 revisit, VERY soon, BTW.

Reason I got on it(5200 Centipede)was,it's the game at the AA 2600 HSC this week, figured I was thinking to pull the ole 5200 out anyway, soo...

I don't think Centipede is a bad choice, like I said, if anything else pops in my mind I'll let you know(Mebbe Tempest, if not for the problems keeping a vector monitor running...).

Thinking on the trackball thing, I doubt I'd be good at it, but I'd give up the tip of my pinkie for a Crystal Castles cab, mebbe one you'd consider...

Ironically, I really don't do any 2 player stuff at all, and don't really have a big "hang out" crowd, IRL, but(tho I know this doesn't fit what you are looking for, I know), I think some of the best cabs to own would be ones with high 2 player value, Street Fighter 2, Super Off Road(Yay Me!!), Gauntlet, Track and Field(Oh, hell yeah!), etc...

Mostly, pick whatever seems the most fun to you, is a pretty big investment, usually.

    Good Luck!!!

But the actual question, I'd say Centipede would be a VERY important score!!!

(Obviously, I read your initial post too fast, and answered a question you didn't ask, but it took me a long time to type, so I'm just leaving it there...I'll pay closer attention next time...)

    :P

i dont mind going off topic on the 5200, fun system. the track ball adds a lot of fun. remember, the track ball doesnt help you go faster, it helsp you go slower. you need the slowness for precision moves, sometimes the joystick skips too far.

Ah, gotcha, it's murderously difficult, mebbe even trying to "understeer" a little will help.

Yeah, on account of playing over at AA, I cruised around and found a really good deal on some 5200 stuff, the Guy worked with me so much, it was hard to pass up, 10 boxed games, 5 loose, several Activision, so the wind just kinda blew me there, haha!!!

Before I even look farther into it, not saying you're the "be all, end all", tho I am respecting your thoughts on the Super Gameboy, haha, what do you think of playing with a WICO stick, or even a 2600 stick, on one button games, with the WICO Y-adaptor?

Again, I don't hate the stick as much as most people, I think, but it is still a drag when you blow a game because the controller does, in fact, suck...

i prefer original, but tg had made its ruling on third party controllers. as opinion, i respect original more, come decision time though, its not place to rate performances on coolness, i adjudicate based if rules are followed

I agree with @Rogerpoco in that I think whether or not you find playing the game a lot fun is crucial. If you don't really like playing it, it's just going to make the struggle that much harder. In my opinion, anyway.

Centipede is a great game, and if you're going to own a cabinet, it's a true classic - great sound, gameplay and artwork. It really is a complete package, and even people who are not arcade machine enthusiasts always seem attracted to it. Great gameroom addition.

As for the record, I think it's a fantastic record to shoot for, and one that requires a high degree of mastery to even make a mark on.

Are you lookinig to try for the marathon or tournament track? They both look incredibly difficult to me, but I'm terrible at Centipede on any platform, so I'm not the best one to ask.

i'm looking for tournament. "spider trapping" i think is good to allow, you know how i feel about "spirit of the game" judgment calls, and the marathon track allows the "not spirit" of the game stuff. way i see it, millipede fixed the issues, and if you wanna force someone to play spirit of the game, millipede probaby is the way to go

however, as much as i ral against "spirit of the game" when judging others, i feel differently when judging myself. i actually agree the marathon tactics like spider tapper or just hanging out on the non flea stage leeching is lame. i enjoy the tournament style of play much more.

The sounds effects in Centipide are simply awesome. And in my opinion Bucker and Garcia's Centipede is far superior to PacMan fever.

I like to think of the top-25 or top-50 "most important" scores or accomplishments.

I assume everyone's list is different. But Centipede is on that list.

It's one of the original classics. It has to be respected.

    If that helps.

I was actually thinking more like top 5, tbh, I think you were making sure to err on the side of caution in your response, there are a LOT of great games.

Just it being one of the top 5 "known" games, surely, it's mass appeal(I think it was known for appealing to female gamers, but IDGAF about that, a gamer is a gamer, Guys were just more exposed then, not "better", or more "able"), and it being the main classic trackball game(Crystal Castles is VERY classic to me, but still, it's not Asteroids classic, like Centipede), I would definitely put it in the top 5.

Not bagging on either of us, Snow-

I didn't see Tapper much in the arcades, mostly at "beach bars" in Florida, where kids were allowed to come in, but obviously was pretty much a "bar", and I've been sorely disappointed at the general response about my own Burgertime accomplishments, other than doing it itself-no one under 30 seems to even remember the game, and people that I talk to older than that don't see it as important as Kong, and Pac, and Invaders, etc.

    But Centipede...

My own top 5 being as OBJECTIVE as I can, and in no order, would be:

    Space Invaders

    Pac man

    Asteroids

    Galaga

    Centipede

I could see Ms Pac being ticked on not being included, and IS a better game than Pac, but to me, that's the five-not necessarily games I like, but the ones that stand out as "Important".

Just do it, Man, stop even thinking about it, you already know you want to, so just do.

i never knew tapper existed till, oh gee, was it 4 years ago now? I was surpried to get as many high fives as i did. by the time i really realized peole cared i arleady lost the record. at least when i got it back i made a point to appreciate. but my sense of self worth is in no way tied to it. a fun game, but no hard feelings you never heard of it, when i never heard of it either!

i agree more or less on your top 5, i never heard of galage till 1999, but thats more on me, theres always that one famous thing that for whatever weird reason one of us never heard of.

and you're right, i'm likely gonna get it anyway, this is just to help encourage me over the edge.

Oh ya definitely.... I don't mean to say it's 25th or 50th most important....

But I'm not going to argue with the guy who says pole position or Frogger is more important than Galaga etc... I see the 25... or 50 ... all in one category... in one bag. There shouldn't be a ranking order.

Whose to say that one Classic is more important or tougher than the other. To get the World Record is equally as difficult..... and equally as impressive and respected.

I left Kong off the list, unintentionally at the time-I WOULD include it, but it would have to be a top 6 list, I don't see anything I'd leave out to replace it with.

Not sure how I missed that, because subjectively, I'd say it was the most important to me(my Dad was 100k good), tho I know many disagree.

    Agreed!!!

frogger is brutal too, but i think not just cause of the games difficulty, but mainly cause the players pushed it so insanely far. even an easy game (not that frogger is easy) is tough to get a record on if great players are competing on the easy game

I'm not on the same page as you guys on Tapper. It was one of my favorites. My local arcade had it in its heyday. We had an original delivery in 1983.

I played Tapper, Vs Tennis, Tron, Frogger, Gyruss and Punchout as my GO TO games.

I may have had competition on those games.... but one game that I could not be beat was Chexx Hockey (also known as Bubble Hockey). Like in the movies, I was a young lad beating older teenagers and all their friends would laugh seeing their 17/18-year-old boyfriend/buddy getting beat by a 12/13 year old. It was awesome.

For my list, Tapper is up there with Donkey Kong.

I'm starting to learn how to play "Gyruss." My success was getting 9,999,999 on the Konami Arcade Advanced. Let's just say I'm not going to be one of the folks who plays for more than 48 hours.

now i'm enjoying the conversation, so no hate at the off topic, but it appears my question may have been misinterperted. i'm not saying "what game should i get", but rather "should it be centipede". Its centipede or nothing and i'm considering nothing. I already have pengo, q*bert qubes, baby pacman and a broken neo geo i plan to soon get rid of.

i know i like centipeide i know i would play it alot, but its always a big decision to get a game or not. So i figured if enough people respected it that might help push me over.
