The time I cheated

So despite for the most part being proud of doing things by the book i did in fact cheat once -- dont get excited, it wasnt a tg record, it was a magic tournament (magic the gathering card game) and as its my only expereince cheating i think of it alot when trying to understand cheaters.

the prereleases 10-15 years ago i kid you not, more than half the people cheated. To fully explain how i/everyone knew that was the case is its own story, but long story short is, everyone know that alot of people cheated. i wont say "everyone" but yeah it was way more than half. I finally got frustrated after several years of losing to cheaters -- now gratned it was one of those thing where any one person might not have cheated, but the odds of them all having the cards at random, no, i knew not everyone got those cards fairly but i couldnt prove the particular cheaters -- i finally got fed up and cheated too.

we hear all the time "eveyrone else is doing it so i leveld the playing field". sometimes thats just an excuse, sometimes its real. By the way, i got caught after the third time doing it, and so i guess i should say i cheated 3x and got away with it 2x. The more we see of old tg and the corruption i start to wonder if some cheaters wanted to do things the right way but got so frustrated at everyone else cheating that they finally gave in.

now dont get me wrong, i still want them banned, thats the only way to stop the cycle. once you allow it and "eveyrone does it" the problem only spreads. i'm just saying that might explain the mass amounts of it. once you reach critical mass of cheaters who get away with it, everyone otherwise honest people start to get fed up and give in to the temptation as well

Trying to understand motive is a difficult enterprise when we have so few insights from gamers who recanted scores. Steve Sanders still stands as the only example that I'm aware of where a TG competitor fessed up and took responsibility. Sanders once said that when he heard of a new record on Donkey Kong, he just doubled his score. He also once observed that there was widespread cheating back in the day, but I don't recall if he cited that as "motivation" for him to do the same. Certainly when you look at sports like pro cycling or track and field, the refrain is often that other athletes are dirty, so to compete you have to be dirty too. Of course, that stance downplays the constituency of clean athletes who are taking the "hit" to compete honestly and the governing authorities that want a clean sport as well.

On the topic of TG, I don't get the impression that when it comes to pursuit of a WR on a single title that the field of competitors is also employing dishonest tactics - it's generally a case of a gamer who's "good enough" is also looking for "an edge" to separate themselves from the field. Records on high profile games are also more scrutinized, so my own take is that fewer people are willing to take the risk of using shortcuts even if they were inclined in the first place.

good phrasing "single title". i hope i didnt imply that all zelda players were cheats. no, i agree, on the particular titles it seems there was often just one cheat. however, in the more general quest for recognition, if someone can cheat on say donkey kong and get fame that way, someone else might want to cheat on zelda and get their fame. also, dont forget "world record count" was a competitoin as well. so once it became clear people were inflating the wr counts i could see others also wanting to inflate their counts. so sure, while they may have been the only cheater on their particular titles, they were still competing with other cheaters for overall acknowledgmenet as "a great gamer".

Jason. He HAD to "fess" up, he got caught out. Here's the irony.........he got caught out by someone that went on to be a more famous cheat than himself. I'm sure there's more known irony there, but I'll digress.

brain games on the same track i got a higher score on later. what half wits like lexmark didnt realize is that my "cheating" that made the game easier atually made it harder, and when i did things their way i easily maxed it out on resubmission, he likes to leave that part out as well as leave out there was no falsification of evidence and everything was upfront unlike his top secret hidden zookeeper sub

I'm going to be biased here, Marc. I'm not going to provide a link that incriminates our good friend Snowflake.

I will however provide a link if it costs him some "THANKS" scores

There is no "secret" as to why I haven't released a full game of ZK to the general public.

    Everything else is upfront.

Everyone that cares/is expert enough knows how I got those scores. It's all documented.

If they don't know then they haven't been paying attention.

I haven't in ten years seen or heard of anyone call BS!

Do you know of anyone that's calling BS?

    BOOM!

The truth is in the linguistics. He's not saying that he doesn't believe any of the scores because there must be something fishy going on. He means that he doesn't believe any of the scores because WOW they are so great.

    You see the difference, Bill!
