TWIN GALAXIES
04-30-2021 at 12:15 PM

Just a small note to let the community know that we have been working on creating the ability for members to use aliases for their participation on the site.

To be clear, in order to be VERIFIED and submit, adjudicate and participate in various Twin Galaxies site functions, Twin Galaxies must still have/retain your full legal name for its private records - however, we are implementing the option for that information to be known and limited only to Twin Galaxies itself, if that is the TG Members desire.

Currently, when things are submitted, a member's full name is attached to the submission. We have received many requests from people for the ability to hide that information, and in fact there are competitors who do not participate due to this feature. Therefore we are working on adding a user option to hide real names.

We are attempting to make the feature work RETROACTIVELY. Affecting all previous submissions and posts for a user. Which adds to the complexity of the implementation. We will keep the community posted on progress.

Once we complete this, we will finally be able to begin work on multiplayer submissions, supporting 2,4,6,etc. player team submissions.

So those are the next big items that are on the way!

P.S - Also we got "clickable images in Wall Feed" working - so now you can just click them and see the larger image without having to click the full post. Feel free to try it!

Thank you for your patience and participation here at TG!

I dunno. The heart and soul of TG is/was it being "real people", I think this is a terrible idea, and *bang* , out of the blue, users want 2p submission stuff dealt with, and platforms combined as they should properly be, and we get...

Anonymous submissions.

I thought that was part of what set us apart, but I guess I was wrong.

Terrible news, terrible idea, should have been a blip of a thought, will ruin what TG is.

Cranky?

No, just realistic.

Dang. Not gud.

Love you Roger, but Imma disagree here. As far as I remember from the registration process, and viewing submissions here, TG doesn't validate if you provide your correct name initially. If members call it out in a submission, then TG will validate if the member then provides a plausible name. If I had entered Edward Moore rather than Sean Dwyer, would anybody have fact checked that? No. So who really knows who anybody is here.

I don't think people are trying to be anonymous or secretive or anything like that. Certain gamers have already built up a reputation outside of TG using a specific user name. If they use only their real name here, their followers might not make the connection between their real name and their user name.

As TG mentions in the post, I've seen potential new members shy away from TG because of the real name issue. If it is something that encourages the member base to grow, I'm in favor of it.

Edit-

And I'm gonna walk away from this one, sorry for the opinion that seems to disagree with the...current trend of the World. SMH about it, but I just don't want my scores next to "DongerGodofGames", seems...weird.

It's a privacy issue. I'd rather be inconspicuous. Not because I want to do devious things, I don't want devious people to find or use my credentials.

Birth day is right, birth year is wrong.

A weird name likes a post about weird names?? ;)

Dude, nobody's scores are next to "DongerGodofGames" apart from your own subconscious !
We all have the option to name ourselves. Our birth names, are not even ours. They are someone else's choice.
And according to the "birth certificate" contract, I can't even use it, as it belongs to the Queen!! The "law" is crazy.
Your friend,
Mr. X.

Good feature, have definitely had some weird conversations with clients/potential clients as a result of using the site and them using google.

I personally think real names should be broadcast less than they are now, but not removed all together.

I dont like how "Such and Such just submitted a score to the track..." is on all the notifications. Why cant it just use the alias for that without adding the real name at the end? Same with the headline on the top of the page of ones actual submission. I think that promotes people calling each other by real names rather than alias's.
I think real names should probably remain on the actual list of scores though.

A potential problem no one has brought up, using real names establishes a certain level of credibility. Whats to stop he-who-shall-not-be-named from make a "I-HEART-USA-TIES" gamer-tag and submitting? Sure the admins would have ID info, but it would more than likely be the community that would disseminate that info and expose said underhandedness, and this could make it harder for them to do that.

It would be much easier for a cheater to make sock account after sock account with fake names using gamertags.... or even if someone just wanted to make a fake person to pad their ESI and placement on certain tracks.
I know all that could be done now, but I think with the current system its easier to suss them out than it would be if real names were removed altogether.

I favor this move to an extant, but I'm also torn about it and just hope it doesnt have these kinds of negative repercussions. I would support a move which toned down the broadcasting of real names in the live submissions and notifications, but left them intact if someone were to dig for the information in their records searches.

wow roger, you're not normlaly that harsh, and i do partially agree with both you and those who your criticzing -- really i do, despite it seemed contradiction

yeah it seems weird when people throw a temper tantrum over requiring name, so i'm board with your criticism of those people, since for the reasons you state they shoulddnt be surprised. however at the same time, to the people who respectfully and quietly walk away cause of name requirement i kinda get that too. people like to compete, there can be issues with real name. we all have different sides of our life, the people who someone shares their handle with knows they're on top, and the other parts of their life that dodnt know that name dont

for me the big thing is i dont want one person having multiple names and filling up the board to push others off. but it sounds like having real name exisst, just private will prevent that

Anonymity feeds bad behavior online; I've seen it so many times.

I see our real names not our handles are appearing does this means handles are gone abs whatever we pick for a name is all that will ever be shown

Not sure how it matters, anyway.
All registered players have their real names registered.
Just clicking on any score of that "weird name" gets you to their real name.
What is your problem??
My name is NOT Kernzy P.
Who the f*ck cares?

I think its work in progress, but if you go to your profile settings you should see a feature to set that you can use your handle...

Im torn which name I should use LMFAO!!!

In all seriousness and candor, I personally don't like the proposed change. But that just means I now like TG only 1 billion times more than it's closest "competitor" (read: other scoreboards more than 6 months old) instead of the 1.1 billion times as much as it was yesterday at this time. Real names being used in a competitive environment tend to keep people more civilized. If you're thinking to yourself, "Gee, Garrett ... do you actually think Mr. XYZ is civilized?" Nope ... I don't ... but just imagine how much more uncivilized they would be were they to be able to hide behind an alias. People also tend to bullshıt more under an alias ... MUCH more. The second element is that I personally have a challenging time taking seriously any record on any site belonging to someone who doesn't or won't put their name on their work, including this one. I had the opportunity to choose a handle when I signed up. My attitude was "hell no ... I want credit for my accomplishments, not some stupid avatar or tag name.", because after just a cursory glance at this site, I knew this site was serious and not simply some "trust me bro" crap like everywhere else.

It is what it is. Just my personal take. Definitely not a dealbreaker that would make me desire to leave.

I've been around long enough to notice that it doesn't matter if it's real name or alias. Some real name dudes BS just as much as anyone else!

ANYWAY. I get why a young business person might not want their real names published. It's not a good look if a prospective customer doesn't understand how NERDS think. (should they google your name and find TG)

I don't like the idea of real names not been shown on the scoreboard. But, whatever!

The way I see it, TG is a competition org that has some elements of a social media platform. With this proposed change, it will become a social media platform with some elements of a competition org. It has been my experience that there are always bullshıtters no matter the org or platform, however, it has also been my experience that the behavior of people I personally know is different on social media when they are behind a cloak of anonymity ... meaning, they bullshıt much more than they do when they're not hiding behind a pseudonym. It is my contention that if you think person X is a total bullshıtter whilst spreading it under their actual name, it is highly likely that they'd be much worse under the cloak of anonymity. I would say "definitely" rather than "highly likely", but I don't know all 7 billion humans currently alive, so Im leaving the possibility that there might be one or two that do not bullshıt more while under the cloak of anonymity.

What I'm saying is that this is a small community. we regulars know most real names behind the alias. You're probably right though in a totally anonymous forum/situation.

as I dont have experience here i'm not arguing/saying people are wrong just providing more context that may not be enough to counter the point but worth considering. I have heard real names make better behavior. but isnt that because of fear of real world consequences? that same fear of real world consequences allows for a different type of bad behavior and bullying. I have a jealous former member insanely angry i broke his scores and he started publicly accusing me of actual crimes. no talk of games, just first strike was lies about me being a criminal, that much of psycopath. you guys know me, sure, now we can argue over who started if or if i "proved his point" by insulting him back, but for what its worth, yes i've seen the bad behavior some psychos use to try to intimade others who beat their s cores.

TG is gonna have to balance which form of bad behavior is worse. The bad behavior that comes from knowing there are no real world consquences? Or the bad behavior the comes from having peoples real name so you can stalk them in real life. LIke i said, not a true argument cause i only have expereince with the bad behavior the currenty system encourages, i can only think of people who abuse that. So perhaps this is the lesser of two evils, just something to consider
