Could The Fortnite Meteor Event Be A Superhero Origin Story?

We put on our tinfoil hats and look at the evidence that the meteor may be bringing more than just destruction in its path. Could this be the rise of superheroes in Fortnite and maybe a new mode?

Every superhero needs an origin story. That’s why Fortnite might be making its own with the Tilted Towers Meteor event going on currently.

With today’s additional reveal of a female superhero tease, it’s easy to see that Season 4 of Fortnite will take on a more comic book inspired flair. But, where did the superheroes come from? What could this entail for gameplay? Even the new teaser image (shown below) on Twitter hints at a connection between the two. We put on our tinfoil hats and came up with our best guesses. Seriously, this is my own wild theory based on evidence, not confirmation, and nothing more.

The Meteor Origin Story

This is by far the biggest, most drawn out change that Epic Games has made to Fortnite. Starting a month ago with the addition of llamas scattered on the map, a single comet in the sky, multiple in the sky, and now rocks making landfall, this is setting up for something big. The main theory says that Tilted Towers will become the crater, but what if this is deeper than we expected?

The Meteor just appeared one day...

The original meteor has a blue light from it, which according to real science means the meteor is full of magnesium. According to WebMD, magnesium is used for a ton of reasons, all of which are to enhance the body, mind, and energy.

“Some people use magnesium for diseases of the heart and blood vessels including chest pain, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, high levels of "bad" cholesterol called low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, low levels of "good" cholesterol called high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, heart valve disease (mitral valve prolapse), metabolic syndrome, clogged arteries (coronary artery disease), stroke, and heart attack.

Magnesium is also used for treating attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, cystic fibrosis, alcoholism, mania, recovery after surgery, leg cramps at night and during pregnancy, diabetes, kidney stones, migraine headaches, a long-term pain condition called complex regional pain syndrome, weak bones (osteoporosis), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), altitude sickness, urinary incontinence, a condition that causes burning pain and redness called erythromelalgia, restless leg syndrome, asthma, hayfever, multiple sclerosis, and for preventing hearing loss and cancer.

Athletes sometimes use magnesium to increase energy and endurance.”

Magnesium in a person causes a lot of reactions to the body, but what if it’s a super-powered meteor with a ton of it crashing nearby? We suspect that with the right catalyst, it could make super-powered people.

New Fortnite Mode: Super-Powered Battle?

Alright, so what do super powers mean in a world where the biggest weapons you have are rocket launchers and mini-guns?

I liken this idea to comparing the games Grand Theft Auto to Crackdown, Infamous, or Prototype. In GTA, players are normal people, shooting normal weapons and moving around an open-world map like normal people can. In Crackdown, Infamous, and Prototype, the open world still exists, but getting around it is a lot different when you have super powers. Jumping, flying, and killing people in your wake are just routine in these games.

The honorable mention goes to The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for offering this type of gameplay early on in the genre. I’d bring up the classic Spider-Man 2 game here, but buildings in Fortnite are fewer and farther apart (for web-swinging in the open world), whereas in Crackdown and Incredible Hulk, jumping is just like a skip to the players.

I'd be doing a disservice to not mention the progression of the Saints Row franchise as well here, starting out as a GTA clone and eventually becoming more and more its own. By Saints Row 4 had hit, the characters were abducted by aliens and put in a The Matrix-like simulation, where they got full-on super powers. In the not-a-Saints-Row-spin-off-but-still-a-spin-off, Agents of Mayhem, some characters assume powers as well (taking more inspiration from G.I. Joe than the superhero genre), depending on the agents being used as well. This game series started out as street gangs trying to win over territory.

But, what does this have to do with Fortnite? If superheroes are involved, everything. Looking at how older games deal with superheroes can give us an idea of how Fortnite may.

Fortnite: Infinity Civil Secret War?

Instead of just weapons, picking up “Skills” or “Powers” could completely change the way someone plays the game. Imagine having impenetrable skin, going up against someone with a pistol? Or a hovering/flying ability against someone with only a pickaxe? It can change the dynamic entirely.

What if the players spawn with a random power or two? I mean, origin stories don’t often give the person a choice of what their powers will be. A Superhero Blitz mode could cause chaos. Give players an attack power and a defense power and set them loose on the map.

Could It Just Be New Costumes And Nothing More?

I’m sure Epic Games will gladly hand over superhero costumes for a stack of V-bucks, but this Meteor event is setting up for something big. I don’t see them only handing out a costume theme and moving on after this.

While my tinfoil hat theory may be completely off the mark in the next few days, it’d be interesting to see where it goes. I, for one, believe this is their best opportunity to cash in on the superhero craze, add a new mode to the game, and take advantage of the world they’ve created.

Check out our other speculation piece on why the entire map should be ravaged by the meteor and not just the Tilted Towers.
