Taking a look beyond gaming, we highlight five gaming channels for their excellent reviews, lists, and personalities that are worth subscribing to.

YouTube is definitely the platform that keeps on giving, even though many struggle to actually make a living as they once did. For many it's a primary source of visual entertainment. Those obsessed with the gaming medium, have a ton of options to always be in that mindset. While there are thousands of well-known video creators, we would like to take some time to focus on a few smaller channels. Here are five gaming channels worth a subscription.

10 Nintendo Switch eShop Games That Are WORTH The Price!

BeatEmUps is a laid back channel that tends to focus on retro gaming, but has had a recent influx of videos on handhelds like the Vita and Switch. Really it’s Wood’s taste in games that makes his videos so much fun to watch. His knack for finding obscure titles makes him a great source when it comes to finding something new or missed.

Wood also shows up in The Game Chasers episodes, where he’s even more relaxed and always giving the fellas a hard time. Pretty much anyone that shows up on the Game Chasers are worth checking out.

A Hat in Time - AntDude

AntDude has often been compared to PeanutButterGamer, mostly because of his similar style of humor. AntDude’s reviews and retrospectives are well-done critiques sprinkled with hilarity. He’s done everything from Kirby to Kingdom Hearts and even has a ton of videos on rom hacks. A Hat in Time was one of the best games of that year; AntDude’s review shows just how much fun he too had with the game and the light hearted nature fits his style perfectly.

Jesper Kyd Documentary - Bound to Sound | Gameumentary

Video game documentaries are popping up all over the place, but one of the more recent attempts at capturing the people behind games is Gameumentary. This documentary series tries to tell the stories of more recent game developments, covering titles such as Hob, Bioshock, and Perception. A special piece to highlight is all about one of the minds behinds the music of Darksiders, Jesper Kyd.

The team behind Gameumentary have a knack for high production values, smart editing, and telling stories that otherwise may have gone untold. Their work has a deep importance to gaming as an artform and their channel doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.

DONKEY KONG COUNTRY TROPICAL FREEZE: The Game That "Should've Been Metroid" | GEEK CRITIQUE

The Geek Critique should probably get an award for attention to detail and thoroughness. His channel focuses on long-form study of games, usually in a larger series, where he plays the game (typically several playthroughs) and writes an essay on it. The way he studies level design, tone, story, mechanics, is all reminiscent of how a scholar might approach a work of Shakespeare.

I find that after watching a video from the Geek Critique that I learn something new about a game I thought I knew everything about. This piece in particular is an in-depth look at Tropical Freeze, but I also recommend his work on the Metroid franchise with episodes that are just overflowing with clever thoughts and excellent writing.

Unepic Adventures for the Sega Game Gear: AX BATTLER Review - An Unfortunate Assplosion

DariaPlaysRPGs is one of the best smaller channels to learn about the most obscure RPG titles. Her uploading schedule may not be as often as some, but each video she does seems to stand the test of time. Clearly, this creator knows her RPGs and that vast knowledge translates into her scripts. It's also fun to watch her grow as a creator with each piece and she has the fewest subscribers on this list.

This video in particular is about a Game Gear Golden Axe RPG, which is something I knew existed, but had never seen played. Apparently, it’s not the best game out there, but for those interested in Sega’s history, it’s an interesting title.
