Cyberpunk 2077 is a single player RPG, but CD Projekt Red have said multiplayer could happen after the game is released.

We first heard about Cyberpunk 2077 over six years ago, in May 2012. The teaser trailer in January 2013 blew everyone away, but then CD Projekt Red went quiet. Until now. We saw the second ever trailer for the game during Microsoft’s E3 2018 presentation, and the Polish development studio confirmed they’re working on the game. Check out the trailer below.

It’s inspired by Cyberpunk 2020, a tabletop game from 1988. It’s a first-person RPG where players assume control of V, a protagonist that you create. V can be male or female, and look however you decide. At E3 2018, members of the press were given a private showing of the game, and Eurogamer had the opportunity to interview CD Projekt Red.

One of the questions they posed to quest designer Patrick Mills is that of multiplayer. At its heart, Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game, but Patrick told them that “multiplayer is in R&D, but the game we’re shipping to you, the game you’re going to buy is the single-player RPG experience.” When asked if multiplayer could come post launch, Patrick said “maybe, no promises. Nothing at launch.”

It doesn’t look like co-op is a possibility either, as Patrick explained to Eurogamer that despite having an AI sidekick called Jackie for a few missions, most of the game will be spent as a solo player. Adding co-op seems like it would go against the story CD Projekt Red want to portray, so don’t expect to be buddying up with a pal.

Perhaps we could see a GTA V style of multiplayer post-launch? Or maybe the Watch_Dogs system is more of what they’re looking for? No release date for the game has been announced, so it’s likely going to be a while before we find out, but it’s always fun to speculate.

Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the only game to have received a brand-spanking-new trailer at E3 either. We’ve got a juicy Soul Calibur 6 one right here, or perhaps 1000-man battle royale is more your style with Mavericks: Proving Grounds?
