Far Cry 1 had a fantastic multiplayer, and it's seeing somewhat of a revival thanks to modders.

As is often the case with older games, multiplayer servers get taken down due to dwindling player bases and sequels being released to hopefully improve on what the earlier games offered. Far Cry 1 is an example of this; Ubisoft released it in 2004 and while it was immensely popular, we’ve since had Far Cry 2, 3, 4 and 5, along with spin-off games Primal and Blood Dragon. Far Cry 1’s multiplayer was hugely popular at the time, and if you’ve got fond memories, you can now relive it thanks to mods.

A Reddit post from /u/Roadkilll details all. It explains that the modders have gone further than just bringing the servers back online - bugs have been fixed, patches have been merged to create the optimal version of the game, and they’ve even included a map downloader feature, which wasn’t in the original game.

It uses a third party program called Last Resistance 2 and has removed the need to log in with your Ubisoft account, so you won’t be offering up any personal information. You can find the official site for LR2 and download it here, along with more information and a forum to ask any questions you may have. There’s a length introduction with a lot of details included though, so make sure you read through it all first.

/u/Roadkilll explains in the Reddit post that Assault is currently the most popular mode, with clan matches already taking place. Other mods like free-for-all, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag are also available. There shouldn’t be any issues playing it on Windows 7, 8 or 10 either, although the FAQ states that you should give it admin rights to be sure.

In other video game news today, popular streamer Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins has given his thoughts on the recent news that the World Health Organisation has classed gaming addiction as a real disorder, while Nintendo have joined forces with Disney to create a family gaming tournament.
