Battle for Azeroth Brings New PvP Changes to World of Warcraft

The newest expansion to World of Warcraft will mix up the way people play PvP with some intense changes.

World of Warcraft has always been a game about the community, with the various countless players that make up the Horde and Alliance proving to be the real stars of the show. From serious role play servers, to more casual PvE places where people can relax, the underlying current for the game throughout its history has always been war, and now Blizzard is changing the way that people combat each other with the upcoming Battle for Azeroth expansion.

Coming in the new expansion is War Mode, which will give players a lot more control over how and when they can engage in PvP combat. Here are the details fresh from the dev team themselves:

“We’re introducing a new way of getting into PvP out in the world with a system we’re calling War Mode. War Mode tears down boundaries and server rule-set distinctions, allowing players on any realm to decide when they want to jump into a world PvP experience full of like-minded players in the ongoing battle between Horde and Alliance.

This new system gives us the opportunity to revisit World of Warcraft PvP as an open-world experience, building on the latest game technology available. Players can decide on the type of gameplay experience they want to have no matter their realm of choice. Whether that means opting out of world PvP entirely, gathering allies and venturing out into dangerous lands when the mood strikes you, or turning on War Mode and never looking back—the choice will be yours.”

This new style of gameplay is designed to prevent players from feeling locked into a specific playstyle, with players who may have joined a PvE server to play with their friends feeling locked out of PvP, while players who initially joined a PvP server to join the fight perhaps wishing for a more peaceful experience at times.

War Mode itself brings with it some interesting changes, as outlined in the announcement post:

“Players who choose to turn on War Mode will get a few additional bonuses while in the mode. First, while War Mode is on, all PvP talents you’ve chosen will be available to use anywhere PvP can occur, providing a more consistent and efficient experience as you level. Rather than having your PvP talents toggle on and off depending on your location in the world or whether you’re engaged with a creature or another player, you’ll have access to them everywhere PvP can happen. Sanctuary areas will still be PvP free.”

Additionally, players engaged in War Mode will gain bonuses to experience gains while leveling up, to counteract the potential loss of experience that naturally comes with PvP combat. Players will also gain bonuses to gold, resources, and Artifact Power gained from World Quests while toggled into War Mode. Players will be able to toggle War Mode once they reach level 20 and visit either Orgrimmar or Stormwind and setting their preference in the Talent pane.

That’s not the only thing coming with the newest expansion, with Blizzard introducing the Bounty Hunter system. Killing players from the enemy faction without dying will grant Infamy, giving the player in question a bonus to their damage and healing by 15%, whilst also becoming visible on the Zone Map for all to see, meaning that players will be coming after you.

Finally, Blizzard are bringing Air Drops to the world, which will periodically fall from the sky and become available for capture by either faction. Once a faction has gained control over the crate, anyone from that faction in the area will be able to open it and collect a piece of personal loot for a short period of time, making them very enticing.
