Are 68 characters not enough for you in the upcoming Super Smash Bros Ultimate? New rumors circulating point to the possibility of more characters including King K. Rool, Geno, Castlevania, and Metroid Prime characters being revealed for play this year.

Rumor Update (7/14/18)

Someone else on Twitter has added an additional detail to the rumor in the worm of (yes, again) a 4Chan leak. This goes back to Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Special in Japan) with some possible changes to the announcement lineup.

Supposedly, the announcement would happen "in the next few days", which make either the Shonen Jump Victory Festival or the Sunday Nintendo Direct both in the possibilities for this part of the rumor addition. Since Smash Bros leaks were given as "Codenames", they proceeded to make some changes to it. Originally, the July announcements would include the codenames "King" and "Ponytail", leading to many suspecting King K Rool and Dixie Kong (or Shantae) to be the next additions.

These rumors are coming like a leaky faucet.

According to the rumor, Ponytail is now being moved to be after the game's release as a free update. Instead, "King" will be joined by "Doll" (Geno?), as well as another codename not mentioned before, "Soul". Fans are slamoring for who Soul could be. Among the answers include Soul from Soul Eater, Solaire of Astora from Dark Souls, Sans from Undertale, or literally anyone from the Soulcalibur series. This would make three additions in July, if so.

In addition, there will be a Nintendo Direct in September, according to the rumor, where the now-older codenames "Warrior" and "Folklore" will be announced, as well as new codename to the rumor, "Fake". There's likely two candidates for "Fake", as Sonic the Hedgehog is known for calling Shadow a "Fake Hedgehog". Shadow would be a slower, but stronger, Sonic Echo Fighter. But, it could also allude to newcomer Mimikyu, from Pokemon Sun and Moon. Some suspect he would play entirely different as Pikachu, having different moves (he is a Ghost/Fairy type after all in the games), but be meant as an echo-like character.

Original Story

When Nintendo revealed that Super Smash Bros Ultimate would feature a grand array of every previously playable character in the Smash Bros series, plus Ridley, it was quite a sight to behold, but rumors have been circulating ever since that this might not even be the full list. New leaks are leading players and fans to believe that long-awaited characters and newcomers such as King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country, Geno from Super Mario RPG, and a mysterious Metroid Prime character may be coming, among quite a few others.

The most recent info drops came from an anonymous leak over at the video game boards on 4chan. According to this post, a collection of characters under vague codenames are set to be announced leading up to and after the release of Smash Bros Ultimate. The codenames and general time frames of their supposed reveals can be seen below.

This latest leak appeared on the 4chan video game boards on July 1 and has stirred interest and debate about its validity.

“King” & “Ponytail” are supposedly set for July in a Nintendo Direct.

“Old Man” may appear at EVO 2018 in August.

“Archer” might be in another Nintendo Direct in September.

“Warrior” & “Secretary” are supposedly showing up in October.

“Mech” may be a surprise character meant for November.

“Rhythm”, “Folklore”, “Doll”, and “Prime Ribs” are speculated to be post-release additions.

Now these are rumors from an anonymous source and can therefore be taken with a grain of salt to some degree, but rumors back in June pointed to the possibility of Simon Belmont joining Snake in representation of Konami on the Smash Bros roster. Furthermore, a report on EventHubs added to the buzz in June with a claim that Nintendo could have at least six characters waiting in the rafters for play come Smash Bros Ultimate’s release. Who might these characters be if they were in fact coming to the game? There are some strong possibilities.

According to fans like Reddit user jyrance and commenters over on the 4chan post, Donkey Kong Country nemesis King K. Rool may be a strong bet for a newcomer. He would certainly fit the codename “King”, not to mention that in 2015, when Nintendo hosted a public vote for a new Smash character, K. Rool was a big favorite among fans. On a seperate Nintendo Life-hosted vote, K. Rool came in at #10. Worth noting as well is that Simon came in at #9 and a much-wanted playable Waluigi came in at #6.

K. Rool seems like a strong possibility for addition to the Smash Bros Ultimate roster, but he's not the only newcomer that may come out of Donkey Kong Country to play.

Another point of interest is that “King” sits right next to “Ponytail”, and if “King” is indeed K. Rool, many agree that it would only make sense that “Ponytail” is probably Dixie Kong, which would be another interesting addition of the Kong family to Smash. K. Rool would bring another heavy hitter and villain to the game while Dixie could afford the game another more technical character, somewhat like Diddy Kong.

Another very notable one is “Doll”, which many believe could finally be Geno from Super Mario RPG. Geno was a living puppet and a hard-hitting mage of sorts in the game and fans have asked for the character for a long time. He was another high-voted character for the Smash ballot and could add some interesting long-range play with his magic abilities to the game.

Finally, “Prime Ribs” is of note because of the rumored Metroid Prime 4, which has been in development according to Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with Game Informer, but was mysteriously absent during E3. It could very well be that Ridley isn’t the only Metroid universe character joining the Smash Ultimate roster. Who this character might be is a mystery, but with the context, it can probably be safely assumed that whatever “Prime Ribs” could be is probably a character connected to Metroid Prime 4.

We know next to nothing about Metroid Prime 4 outside of its existence. Could Smash Ultimate feature a new character alongside Ridley and Samus?

The other character codenames are a bit too vague to offer any possibilities without further evidence. “Old Man” could be Cranky Kong, Dr. Light or Wily, or any number of other older characters that have appeared in the Nintendo universe. The same goes for many of the others. Granted these are guesses based on context and research from fans and players of the enthusiastic Smash Bros community. It could also very well be that the original leak at 4chan is just hot air.

That said with tidbit after tidbit of information coming out, some things such as K. Rool and the work on Metroid Prime 4 make at least some these things seem very feasible. One thing appears to be increasingly certain: We are not done seeing new characters for the final roster of Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
