Nintendo is revealing characters for Super Smash Bros Ultimate at a rapid-fire pace. With teases and taunts from Funimation, could we see Goku or Broly in the Switch Smash?

Update: September 5, 2018 - Could the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly be in Smash instead?

A Nintendo Direct has been confirmed to take place on Thursday, September 6, and the Smash community is gearing up for another possible character reveal. While everyone has their guesses, Funimation joined in on the fun by teasing Broly the same way they did Goku prior.

Could we see him? Maybe. But, the anticipation has us shouting KAKAROT at the top our lungs.

Original Story:

The Japanese Nintendo YouTube channel has just announced a tournament to take place at the 2018 Jump Victory Carnival in Tokyo, with the opportunity for fans to sit down and try out the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, along with the recently released Mario Tennis Aces.

The translated text for the announcement reads as follows:

Broadcast Schedule

July 16 (Monday · Holiday) 11: 00 ~ 15: 00 (planned)

"Jump Victory Carnival 2018" will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture on 7/16 (Monday, congratulation) and at INTEX Osaka in Osaka Prefecture on 7/22 (Sunday).

At the Nintendo booth, we will hold a "winning challenge" that will challenge three consecutive victories between visitors and customers at "Super Brawl Smash Bros. SPECIAL" and "Mario Tennis Ace".

On this page we will live stream of July 16th.

The program schedule may change due to local event progress.

Broadcasting may be interrupted or canceled without prior notice due to troubles etc. on the system.

So what exactly does this mean for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? The location of the tournament is very telling, as this is effectively an event for fans to celebrate some of their favorite characters from various different Shonen Jump tales. If Nintendo was to, say, announce Goku for the upcoming game, this would be an ideal location to do so. We’re already expecting to see some announcements in the coming months, with a leak to 4chan pointing towards new characters being announced this month during a mini-Nintendo Direct presentation.

Might we see these two making their way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?
Might we see these two making their way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Should the rumors and leaks prove to be true, this might be the first step towards seeing characters such as Donkey Kong nemesis King K. Rool, or friendly sidekick Dixie Kong making their way to the game. The other previously hinted characters might be somehow related to other fan requested characters, such as Waluigi, or even characters from outside Nintendo properties, such as Goku.

Goku has been one of the most requested characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, so an announcement that he's made the roster would likely make fans of the Shonen Jump character extremely happy. The Jump Victory Carnival would be the perfect place for such an announcement to happen, with a wider update coming to international audiences soon after.

We’ll keep updating this article as new information comes in.
