A surprise pick and a good plan help the Golden Guardians cruise in for their first ever victory in the North American League of Legends Championship Series.

League of Legends is all about firsts. First blood, first turret, first loss, first win; it’s no wonder that teams prepare so hard when they are up against a new opponent for the first time, or have a chance to achieve something for the first time. This week, the Golden Guardians have achieved their first victory in the NA LCS over 100 Thieves, so let’s break down how the game unfolded.

Starting with the bot lane, where Matthew “Deftly” Chen and Matthew “Matt” Elento” were able to secure first blood, and the game was underway. A few more traded kills between the two teams kept the early game fairly close, with GGS managing to secure first Dragon, followed shortly after by both teams trading a turret.

GGS then went on to secure the Rift Herald, and pushed their advantage, taking more turrets and another dragon. A skirmish around Baron that left opposing jungler William “Meteos” Hartman dead, and GGS is able to take Baron and begin to extend their gold lead.

GGS rapidly take three turrets before moving down to take another dragon, then a team fight which saw three members of 100 Thieves dead allows GGS to take another turret and secure their second Baron.

100 Thieves attempt to fight back, taking down mid laner Hai “Hai” Du Lam and securing a dragon for themselves, but by this point GGS are too strong, and they begin to siege the base of 100 Thieves. Pulling back to secure their third Baron of the match, GGS move into the base of 100 Thieves and end the game for their first victory of the Spring Split.

It might have taken a while, but the Golden Guardians have finally shown that they are a team with the potential to not just win games, but execute their plans smoothly, and in a way that minimizes the risk of losing.
