Riot Games Co-Founder Has Plans for New Games

Marc Merrill spoke to Variety on his companies desire to put the "S" in "Games".

For a long time, Riot Games has been the subject of mild ribbing due to their lack of other games outside of League of Legends. While the extremely popular MOBA title may have broken records and set standards for the genre, it is still the only game produced by Riot since their company formed, outside of a board game and the occasional mini-game tied to the LoL franchise.

In an interview with Variety, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill spoke about his desire to produce more than just League of Legends in the future. "We think of League of Legends as a niche market that’s really focused,” he said. “There are lots of games people buy and play on the app store, steam library, on consoles. That creates a lot of interesting questions and challenges, but we focus on what would be worth someone’s time. That’s the only type of game we want to create: games with longevity—that’s worth your time.”

A recent tweet by Merrill fired intense speculation around the internet, as many looked for rumors and speculation that Riot Games might perhaps be working on an MMO. “The tweet was a bit controversial internally,” Merrill said. “Absolutely there was some risk, we may never deliver on that question, on the other hand, it is so validating and exciting to have players’ minds focused on what could come.”

Regardless of the eventual form these projects might take, it is clear that at least internally Riot Games is looking at options to expand their brand beyond the already successful League of Legends franchise.
