SMGs Nerfed And Building Buffed In Latest Fortnite Patch

Epic Games have applied a hotfix today to make some adjustments to the Compact SMG and Drum Gun, along with buffing the initial health of building pieces.

Since the P90, or Compact SMG as it’s officially known, was introduced earlier this season, players have been crying out for a nerf to SMGs. The P90 and Drum Gun especially were incredibly powerful against building pieces and it meant the current meta quickly became unfun to play. It’s taken a while but Epic have finally realised the issues and have implemented a hotfix today.

Both the P90 and the Drum Gun have been nerfed, the latter much more heavily. The P90’s clip size has been reduced to 40 from 50, and the epic/legendary damage numbers have been taken down by one to 20/21. The Drum Gun on the other hand has a number of alterations:

  • Reduced falloff range damage from 80% to 70% at 3500 units
  • Reduced falloff range damage from 65% to 55% at 5000+ units
  • Added environmental damage fall off matching player damage fall off
  • Decreased jumping accuracy by 5%
  • Decreased targeting accuracy by 10%
  • Reduced spawn rate from chests and floor loot by 40%

On the other hand, building has also been very slightly buffed. Each material type has had its starting health increased: Wood has gone from 80 to 90, stone from 80 to 100 and metal from 80 to 110. Hopefully these changes mean the meta will improve and no doubt we’ll all have our own opinions by the end of the week.

“We’ve seen various discussions about SMGs, building material changes, and general weapon vs structure interaction,” reads Epic’s blog post found here. “We agree that weapons should have a unique purpose and that building should feel great as well as show off your tactical skills in the heat of battle. Your feedback in combination with internal testing has shown that previous changes in these areas were not achieving the goals we had set out for. The new changes are aimed at allowing for strengths and weaknesses between the SMGs, shotguns and structures during close range combat.”
