The customization in Fallout 76 will be a little more varied than previous games thanks to the new card-based perks.

In a reveal today at QuakeCon 2018, game director Todd Howard showcased the new character customization system for the upcoming multiplayer survival game Fallout 76. Like previous games in the franchise, Fallout 76 will employ the SPECIAL system to determine a player’s strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck, though the customization will also increase with the addition of a new card-based perk system.

Each point in a SPECIAL stat represents a potential card the player can employ, in order to give themselves a boost in certain areas. The example shown during the reveal was the Gladiator card that is tied to the players Strength stat, adding an increase to melee damage. The card scaled with the associated point cost, so a single point version of the card would increase melee damage by 10%, while a three-point card would increase damage by 30%. If a player had six points in Strength and equipped the three-point version of Gladiator, they would still be able to equip up to three points worth of other cards.

Some of the cards shown seemed to be aimed at players who are looking for a more social experience, such as Strange in Numbers: “Positive mutation effects are 25 percent stronger if teammates are mutated too”, while others seemed more ideal for solo players. The cards are set to drop in packs, with each pack containing four random cards. Howard explained that some cards might be higher than a player’s current level, to encourage them to experiment with their characters builds.
