Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate has launched across the world on the Nintendo Switch. It features the option to transfer a character from one console generation to the next between the Nintendo 3DS and Switch. This guide will show you how.

As Monster Hunter World continues to hit sales milestones and records for Capcom, it seems that Monster Hunter has finally become a mainstream franchise worldwide. This popularity will likely continue for the upcoming Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, which released on the Switch on August 28, 2018. Early previews have been rolling in and the Japanese release has been out for a year or so, but global players do have an option to get an early start if they have a copy of Monster Hunter Generations on 3DS. Players can transfer their character from the last generation 3DS to the Switch with a handy app that has just launched on the 3DS eShop.

For those that are used to Monster Hunter World, Generations Ultimate is a more traditional experience, meaning that it may feel less natural and less streamlined. That said, Generations Ultimate is a “greatest hits” collection of the series with an astronomical amount of weapons and armor and tons of unique monsters to fight. For longtime veterans of the series, or new players looking to utilize the Switch features, it’s a title we can easily recommend.

Here's how to transfer save data step by step:

  • Own a copy of Monster Hunter Generations (3DS) and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)
  • Download Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Save Transfer App on the 3DS eshop
  • Follow steps by selecting the save file you wish to upload. You will be shown a server password that you will then enter on the Switch
  • From the main menu of Generations Ultimate on Switch, select Data Transfer
  • Select link 3DS and Switch
  • Enter the transfer password that was received on the 3DS app
  • Now that link has been established, go back to the 3DS to hit Data Transfer (be sure to claim all items in quests and from Palicoes beforehand)
  • You also have the option to change your character’s look and gender once uploaded. All gender specific items will be switched to the new gender
  • Once data is transferred, go back to Switch and select Receive Save Data. Note that any data created on the Switch will be deleted to be replaced with this 3DS data. Therefore it’s best to do this before starting on the Switch (You will also get bonus items for having Generations 3DS data)
  • Select Continue from the main menu and enjoy your 3DS character

While this process may seem a bit complicated, the onscreen prompts make it fairly straightforward. Just make sure that both devices are charged and ready for the process and in about ten minutes the data will be transferred and ready for the Switch.

We are excited to see how players adopt Generations Ultimate. Will there be more streams or more group meetups due to the portable option? What exciting crossover DLC will Capcom add to this version? How will Monster Hunter World continue to evolve? For decades, being a Monster Hunter fan outside of Japan was a pretty lonely affair, but now is a great time to be into this franchise.
